|
|
My wifes work is sending her to Hawaii. We will be there for 2/weeks.
I'm going for the fishing. Neither of us has ever been there before.
We will be going in either April, May or June. Her work has not given us the deffinate dates yet.
As far as I know the first 5 days we will be on Kauai around the Lihue area. The rest will be on Oahu around the Waikiki area.
I am looking for some spots to shore fish. If anybody could help me out that would be great.
Thanks to all that reply.

Yeah I knew you were kidding, cpt.
I am totally new to saltwater fishing alone. I have gone out on charters and party boats. Here in New England.
My first attempt at shore fishing was in Maine last year. Nothing to brag about but I did catch 6 stripers (all schoolies), on a lure and bait (clams).
The biggest was 24" (lure) and five on clam bellies.
Hawaii. As told to me is TOTALLY differant fishing.
Thanks for the links RACN35. But the cost of a Charter is way over what I can afford.
Thanks for all your replies.

There are quite a few shore fishermen around the Sandwich Islands as a matter of fact. They often scan the beaches looking for fish attacking bait at the surface. They hurl heavy top water plugs into the feeding fish. There are several members of the jack family there that can really fight. As for other shore fishing methods, you are gonna have to dig. Remember to look into the freshwater possibilities also. Some of the freshwater bodies of water over there have world class Peacock Bass fishing.

Kauai has some of the best peacock bass fishing in Hawaii. There are several guides. Check with the fishing supply store in town for areas to fish and what they are hitting. .... fresh water or saltwater. No licence is required for salt water and a freshwater licence is $10 I think.
Do a web search.... "freshwater fishing in Hawaii" or "bass fishing in Hawaii"....... or something like that.
I don't know about shore fishing guides on Kauai.
On Oahu we have Lake Wilson..... peacock and largemouth bass, and other weird tropical fish. The spawning season should be in full swing, so expect some 5 to 8 pound fish. It's easier to fish from a boat, but there are areas a person can fish from shore.
Nervouw Water Flyfishers guides fly fishermen for shore fishing (bone fish) Their web site should give you lots of information. There is also another guy who guides for bonefish .... spinning or fly. Bonefishing in Hawaii is quality, not quantity. You may only get a shot at 5 or 6 fish all day, but as my friend says, " a 6 pounder is considered small."
Did you mention anything about what kind of tackle you prefer? Spinning, bait casting, or fly fishing? Just about anything that will catch largemouth bass will work on Peacock bass.
Right in Waikiki is the Ala Wai Canal. Lots of small baracuda and GT to around 2 pounds or so. Just walk along the street.... LOL I was going there today ligth light spinning and fly tackle, but my son has the boat I wanted to use up at the Lake.
Aloha,
Stan

| I like the spincast reels for my #1 choice. I have 1 baitcast for freshwater and 1 saltwater one I use on party boats for stripers and blues.

Just about everyone in Hawaii uses spinning gear. If your fishing from shore in the lake the casting rod is nice, We use 12# test line from the boat, but if I was using live bait I think 17# or larger would be good, especially with live bait. The peacock bass are often found around downed trees.
For saltwater, it depends on what kind of fish your after. If I was just tossing lures around the shore with light tackle I use 2# to 12# test. The shoreline in saltwater is pretty fished out... (we have unlimited use of gillnets here) and no law enforcement on the rules that are in place. People here eat anything/any size. So not that many larger fish to be found from shore. Smaller fish under 1 pound tend to strike the lighter tackle and smaller lures.
I was using 2# and 4# test in the Ala Wai, because the fish were less than 2 pounds. If I was walking the flats and dunking shrimp or cudle fish for bait...... sometimes 12# to 20# test is not enough. LOL
Aloha,
Stan

Hey all. It has been awhile but I finally got the dates.
We'll be on Kauai Apr. 28th through May 3rd. On Oahu from the 3rd until the 14th of May.
Just figured I'd let everyone know.
