Spring Spawners.
It's been a pretty good spawn for peacock bass here in Hawaii. The bad news is... we need rain in a bad way. The good news is.... with no rain the water level has stayed consistent and the fish are all over the place and easy to spot.
Chris hosted a TV crew from Outdoor Pursuits, so you guys in New England will get a chance to see some of our fishing action pretty soon. Sportsman's News is also doing a picture story.
It's been more "Quality" fishing action, rather than a large "Quantity" of fish caught this last month. The 1 and 2 pound peacock bass are few and far between. The 3 to 5 spawning fish are there. We've seen some peacock bass that have to top the state record 9.4 pounder..... but they just swim away when you toss an offering to them. Fly, lure, or live bait. I know...."That's why they call it Fishing and not Catching."

We have the butterfly peacock bass here in Hawaii... the same as they have in South Florida. Our fish average about 2 pounds with a 3 to 5 pounder not that uncommon. Lots of fun on light tackle. _________________ "Travel while you can still walk" |

You ease slowly along the shoreline looking for the fish in shallow water... These big yellow and orange fish are hard to miss. Two 5 to 8 pound peacock bass sitting in a foot or two of water. They guard the nest. You can hardly push them away with a boat paddle.
If you toss a lure into the nest... say a big white plastic lizard... it drives them crazy. The fish will pick up the lure, move it out of the nest and spit it out. The trick is to set the hook before they spit it out.... Problem is, this all takes place in a split second. Setting the hook isn't easy.
Imagine tossing your lure at a dinner plate. If your just a few inches off target, the peacock bass will ignore you. If your lure is light... like a fly when fly fishing, the fish will just "Blow" on it and send it spinning away out of the nest without ever taking it in it's mouth.
Now remember you are standing a rod length away watching all this in the clear shallow water.
We've had some problems in the last few years with rain raising the water level and and making it muddy so you can't "see" the nest. If you can't see the nest, it's just pure luck to get your lure in the right place. Remember, if you're just an inch or two off target the fish ignore you.
But when conditions are right, it is some exciting fishing. _________________ "Travel while you can still walk" |
