Are Penn 309 reels sufficient when trolling for Kings of the Carolina coast? If not, any recommendations?

Many years ago (in the 60's) I got a 172 Bluefin on one at the Mud Hole off of North Jersey. It was a drop the Ball and chase him for over 4 hours before we got him to the boat I was fishing a light drag on 30 and luckily the fish went to the West, out of the hole and into the shallow water. It was just a matter of everything holding together and being very lucky. Was I happy "Hell Yes" would I recommend it to someone to try or try it again "Hell No", but a lot has to do with the way that you fight the fish and run the boat. I still have that 309 but she has been relegated to wire and Kingfish with a drail, 30 ft leader, and a 3 1\2 Drone spoon until I figure the area out. She's rough but tough, there are many reels better for livebaiting but I bet that reel has put 1000 Kingfish in the boat over the years in Fl so I guess that the answer is yes. The locals can tell you how they will fit into the local game. Tight Lines.
