When we were in Hawaii I was going to go on a charter for Blue Marlin and it was too rough. I read in the paper about a guy that was on a charter boat with 4 others and the marlin jumped right into the mate and broke it's spear off in him. He survived.
Does this happen often?

Minor injuries from marlin, hooks, gaffs and such are common. Injuries that leave a permenent mark happen less often and the ones that require you to go to the hospital are even more rare. Personally I've been banged up pretty good a few times but never anything serious. I've known of two deckhands that have lost an eye and another that almost died after being scewered through the neck and back.
