Fishing Report November 22, 2012 Lahaina Harbor, Maui, HI

Aloha from Lahaina Harbor, Maui, Hawaii. The billfish bite has been slow but thankfully other pelagic species have been around. Mahis are the most standard catch at this point in time and a few onos and tunas have been coming in as well. The following photos show some of Start Me Up's recent anglers and their catches.


How about a double ono bite on an afternoon trip?

One shark-bit tuna is a small price to pay for a good score.

The shibis bit two days in a row.

There weren't as many tunas on the third day, but a few nice mahis moved in.

These guys were stoked with their mahi.

The ono bite was happening on Maui's north shore.

A stringer of mahis at the buoy and then a couple of bonus onos on the troll, including a 42 pounder.

Again, the mahis came off a buoy. This time the bonus ono was caught right in front of Lahaina town.

Here's another ono caught just outside the harbor.

Obviously, this ono was a pretty big fish.

These folks are fishing enthusiasts and had a great time on the water. They caught their mahi on a live opelu at LA buoy.

A 45 lb bull mahi is a trophy fish in any part of the world.

A monster fish is not always required to produce a smile.

This young angler wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty.

These mahis were a direct result of patience and perseverance. Catching bait was difficult but the fishermen waited and got the live opelu that they desired.

There's nothing wrong with a few mahis for the dinner table.

Slow trolling opelu around the inside pinnacles produced a couple of fish. The kawakawa was part of a triple bite.

These fish came off the shoals of Kahoolawe. The aku was a big one at 18 lbs.

Everyone loves variety and a mixed bag of fish is no exception.



Sometimes mahis travel in small packs, resulting in multiple hookups. Not every fish will strike a lure so having a natural bait ready is always a good idea. Being prepared can turn one fish into two or even more.
