Fishing Report: Key west flats fishing report by A.W.S charters January
Another January has passed and I would like to thank all my new and repeat clients for a great month of flats fishing. Key west had a very warm month and many of my clients were able to hook up on tarpon. A big hats off to Tom Rosenmayer, Chris Beatty and Mark Thompson for landing silver kings. The permit fishing was steady all month around Key west, I guided many of my anglers to shot at tailing fish but only Tom Rosenmayer landed 1. Toms fish was a very large permit weighing in over 20 pounds. Bonefish were quite scarces this month with only long time client Matt Calcaterra having a shot. Barracuda fishing started slow this month but really starting heating up towards the end of the month. My best day out on the flats was with Tom and Larry, They landed 4 or 5 and had plenty more hits. I tried a new method of shark fishing this month, I had my clients cast a popper with a piece of cut bait trailing. This did not work well but the eats we did have were truly spectacular. Backcountry fishing was fantastic for many of my anglers with catches of jacks, pompano, bluefish, ladyfish, and look downs. My favorite trip is a yearly trip with Chris Beatty and his family, between the 3 of them they landed 5 truly huge jacks. All and all the flats fishing this month was very good and I expect the same for February so please check out www.keywestflatsfishin.com and book your day.

I hope that readers like yourself understand that writing two or three posts a week takes a considerable amount of time. I take pride in putting useful information that you can trust into every post. So now I am asking that you help me by allowing me to recommend products from time to time, and then sometimes actually purchasing them.
Along this vein I have just opened a new online store at http://www.cafepress.com/spottedtail . Our only products right now are a line of long sleeve jerseys featuring photography by one John Kumiski. That product line will soon be expanding.
Feedback has been good and shirts have already been sold. Please check it out and join the fledgling Spotted Tail nation! Thank you!
Also, I am in the process of finishing up an e-book on Mosquito Lagoon fishing. It will be for sale for $9.95 through my website, but I will be giving all of my subscribers a copy to thank them for their loyalty. Watch for it!

Every year around the turn of the year I inventory my fly tying materials and order what I anticipate I will need for the following year. Natural materials vary a lot so you really need to inspect them. I buy these at fly fishing shows or fly shops. Synthetic materials have standard quality so I buy them where the price is best, usually from Cabela's.
This year I shopped around. Hook and Hackle had better prices on some items than did Cabela's. So I bought some of my stuff from Hook and Hackle. I will never make that error again.
The Estaz packs from H&H were tiny, ridiculous. Cabela's costs a few cents more but the portions are way better.
Cabela's, sorry I wandered! Won't happen again!

Son Alex was supposed to accompany me to the no motor zone on Monday, but he wouldn't get up. Tossed the Prowler on the chariot and went solo.
The day was gorgeous. We had a stretch of five days with no wind and hardly any clouds. I don't ever remember that happening before.
Had to paddle a ways but I ran over a redfish at least three feet long. Immediately staked out the boat and went wading in those leaky boots (sent them

Fishing Report: Another fun year of fishing has begun here on Mosquito Lagoon Florida. So far this January 2012 has seen great weather conditions with cool mornings and some fairly warm days, schooling Redfish have been great fun sight fishing targets, casting select size live shrimp to the visible waking and pushing fish on the shallow flats. Most of these Reds are in the slot size up to 27” with a few fish over the slot being caught also. Winter pattern has most all the fish bunched up together which makes for some of the best sight fishing of the year, most shallow water schools can have from 50 to 500 Redfish swimming together which makes for a fantastic fishing experience. Here are a few pics from a couple of recent charter trips including a shot of a Redfish triple with all 3 clients catching a Red at the same time.
We have also been catching a few quality Seatrout which also live on our grass flats on Mosquito Lagoon. Some trips we catch many Trout fishing drop offs and deeper sloughs which concentrate the also schooling Specks this time of year. Best bait for Trout can be live shrimp and Gulp shrimp jigs hopped along the bottom in the right spot.
With the mild winter we are having, my Backcountry mixed bag fishing trips have been lots of fun with schooling Trout and Bluefish being the main targets of late, can be non stop catching with this easy and fun style of fishing. Also at any time in the mix we can catch Black Drum, Sheepshead, Flounder, Redfish,

Fishing Report: Islamorada Sea Horse Sport Fishing Report
December has proved to be an outstanding month again for fishing the Islamorada area. We have been catching Mahi of all sizes, Sailfish, Kingfish, Tuna, Mutton Snapper, Yellowtail, and other reef fish. The weather has been warmer than previous Decembers; however the fishing has been just as good as any other. We are looking forward to more of the same great fishing through January. With each approaching cold front we look forward to more Sailfish.

Fishing Report: December 20, 2011
Today we had an all day eight hour swordfishing trip. The seas were running 4-6 feet so we had to troll on the way to the swordfishing grounds. For the first two plus hours we never got a bite, and Eric and his father were looking disappointed, but we were sure we were going to catch them some fish. At about 5 hours into the trip, and about 11 miles offshore, we found a piece of bamboo floating in the water, and it was alive. Every few years you find a tree or other floating debris, and it has fish all over it. Today was that day and it was on fire! As we made pout first pass, the wahoo were jumping all over the surface, and bit off all of our rigs. Darin quickly re-rigged with wire leaders and we made another pass. We were catching wahoo and mahi-mahi left and right. It was amazing! We caught a 35lb mahi-mahi and a few 25lb wahoo. We ended up catching 8 wahoo and 8 mahi-mahi in 20 minutes beneath that one piece of bamboo. We eventually made it to the swordfish grounds and made our first drop in 1700 feet of water, with no bites. By this time our charter had enough of the rough seas and we called it a day. Why not, we had already landed an incredible sixteen big fish! Way to go Eric!

Our client Arthur had booked a fishing trip with us last June, but with a death in his family, he had to cancel. He paid for the trip and said he would come back.

Fishing Report: Here it is the 3rd week of December and we are still having 75 to 80 degree days, the warm weather has kept our fishing pattern in a late fall transition pattern with winter cold water not quite here yet. We do have small schools of quality Redfish up to 28 or more inches and loose knit groups near mullet schools. Seatrout catching has been good during this closed season month, the open season starts again on New Years Day. We have had some great sight fishing for Reds on the calm mornings casting shrimp or mullet chunks to the small schools as they push wakes in shallow calm water. Small “runt” Reds are schooling in some of the deeper sand sloughs, holes and creeks, they make for great fun with catch and release fishing these scrappy little fighters, a gulp shrimp jig bounced on the bottom are a good choice for these fish usually having some Trout mixed in with the little Reds.
We have been also having great mixed bag trips which is a fun easy type of fishing, in the Indian River Backcountry at the north end of the Mosquito Lagoon, this type of fishing is for Seatrout, Redfish, Bluefish, Flounder, Ladyfish, Black Drum & other saltwater fish. On the average Backcountry trip we may catch around 10 different species of fish. You never know what will bite with this type of fishing, mainly drift fishing while free lining live shrimp on light tackle make for lots of rod bending and drag pulling. Fun for experienced anglers and an easy way for less
