Fishing Report: Welcome to the Alaskan Fish Guides fishing report. My intention is to update this periodically, as the fishing heats up to keep you up to date with what is happening in my neck of the woods.
First of all, please note that many of the fishable waters of the Kenai will close to sport fishing beginning 12:01 a.m. on May 2. This is a new regulation imposed by the Fish Board to close the "dolly varden" fishing loophole that is resulting in incidental harm and harassment of spawning rainbows. I support this regulation because it helps to preserve the vulnerable, world class trophy rainbow trout of the Kenai River. The area that is closed to fishing on the Kenai is from the Upper Killey River to the outlet of Skilak Lake. Additionally, the entire upper Kenai River will be closed. This is the area between Skilak Lake and Kenai Lake. Also closed are the many tributaries of the Kenai watershed. These waters will re-open to sport fishing on June 11.
While most of the area lakes are still covered with ice, they are no longer safe for travel. This is the time of year that the thickness, consisency and thus the strength of the ice is unpredictable. Normally, the lakes begin to break up some time in the beginning of May.
While the Kenai watershed is closing to fishing, there are opportunities on the Kasilof River, however due to remaining bank ice and low water, the fishing is difficult and potentially dangerous. Most fishing opportunity is in

Fishing Report: Salmon are in. King salmon are around getting dark in color quick. A few bright ones occasionaly. A pack of dogs are fun to catch and not worth trying to eat. Coho are starting to come in. I was happy with the nice 4 pd. Dolly Varden I caught on an egg sac @ the Die pac hatchery fish ladder area. Still searching for a halibut and sockeye spot. Without a boat in Juneau Alaska. I may try charter fishing in Sitka! Picture of nice dolly. Fishon

Fishing Report: PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND
Salt Waters
Salmon
Valdez and Whittier anglers are finding silvers in both ports, and report fishing is fair to good.
Recent bad weather over the long weekend chased many boat anglers off unprotected waters. Silver fishing was reported as slow in the open Sound.
Eshamy is still producing some red salmon, but the run is about done at the estuary and lagoon.
Halibut
Halibut fishing was slow last week as the fish are starting to move off into deeper waters.
The usual hot spots of south Knight Island and Elrington are your best bet.
Try waters deeper than your typical summertime spots.
Lingcod
Lingcod angling is still good on north Montague Island and Elrington.
Lingcod, unlike halibut, will still be in their typical spots until late fall.
Shrimp
Shrimping effort has been dropping off and the last die-hards report small hauls.
Don’t forget to turn in your shrimp permit after the season closes on September 15.
KODIAK AREA
Salt Waters
Saltwater fishing for halibut and rockfish is good this time of year.
Trolling for silver salmon has been fairly good, although not as good as in past years.
Kings are also available when trolling; however, fishing success for kings can vary.
Silver returns from department stocking projects are
