Ahoy there one and all!
Salmon season has started slowly this year with many days lost due to high winds and heavy seas and water temperatures being very cold (48 degrees) – the whole coast has experienced a slow start. We actually had one day with so much life everywhere it was amazing. We had (and still do have) acres and acres of krill shrimp, anchovies and sardines! We also saw 45 Humpback whales and at one point had 15 of them surrounding the boat. I had to take the boat out of gear as I did not want to give the whale some new “BLING” with my hooks!
The salmon finally began to make an appearance! We were out fishing on Wednesday and were enjoying some really great weather. We had steady action all day and to be honest we lost more fish than we landed! There were some really nice pigs there and being fed on both Krill and anchovies these fish were really full of spunk!! Fighting wildly while jumping and cavorting all over the place, with some of the customers just stopping and gasping at the size of these fish! Which as you know with our barbless hooks the fish takes the slack line and spits the hook back at you and swims away.
Not only are there whales and dolphins everywhere but there is also a whole new batch of the scourge of the sea out there too!! The darn sea lions have had a MAJOR breeding season. So there are pup sea lions everywhere.

Fishing Report: MAHI RIP IT UP
Weather almost as hot as the fishing this past week with water temps finally hitting the 90's and air temps tickling triple digits as well but at least it's not humid like it was last week. Last week, the air was as thick and sticky as gravy!
Right now...for the fishing, if you put in a day or two on the water, it was pretty hard NOT to get bit by dorado. You might have an off day or miss the spot but for the most part, it's dorado rodeo time with fish seemingly getting bigger and more and more bulls for both my Las Arenas and La Paz fleets.
Wish people would release more fish actually. No reason to be taking as many fish as I've seen. One guy (not our clients) was bragging about 100 fish today as I listened in a restaurant. I didn't have the heart and was too pissed to ask him if he kept them all, but even if he kept 1/3 of them, that's stupid. Heard someone else talking about 50 yesterday. C'mon...
Quite a few marlin and sails around sometimes literally begging to be fed. Tuna keep popping up at Las Arenas and surprising everyone for a day or two then going to ground then showing up again a day or two later. Nice grade 10-30 pound footballs. Still nice roosters around as well as big dog tooth pargo if you have the patience. Wahoo are in the area, but no one seems to be able to make one stick.
THE ELECTIONS AND AERO CALIFORNIA
Well, as expected, there was

Fishing Report: Ahoy there one and all!!
I know I have not been writing much here recently due to all the time spent working with others at the PFMC council both for the salmon season last month and just finishing up the meetings this week for Rock Fishing. The first set of meetings was around the salmon and I know everyone did their part to make their voice heard. It does make a difference! We ended up with basically a full season for the salmon with just two days closed in the month of June and 2 days closed in July.
Unfortunately, the public’s perception is that the season is closed for both the recreational angler and also for the commercial. Well, I am here to tell you that WE ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS!!
Salmon fishing has gotten off to a slow start, but in the past week we are seeing a huge influx of fish moving into our area. This past weekend I was fishing up west of the harbor with everyone else and it was a very slow day with lots and lots of silvers (which we can’t keep), jellyfish, and weeds. So, on Sunday I decided to head south of the reef and go scouting. I was either going to be a bum or I was going to be a hero.
Running south of the reef and finding some friendly whales and some spots of bait I decided to give it a try. We hooked into a nice king which was about 15 lbs! A nice start! We continued to hook more fish and I put the word out to the other

Fishing Report: WATERS WARM and SO DO THE FISH!
Ahhh..it's that time of year again when we got a little of everything going on! Lots of those lazy flojo marlin that were just lying around for several weeks have finally started getting with the program...and gotten hungry for boats working out've Las Arenas. In fact, even the East Cape boats were getting in on it with boats snaking up to fish the 88 spot and our buoys east of Punta Arenas. Sailfish and a snap of big tuna also perked interest (see story below). Of course, as is often the case at spots like the 88 or at El Bajo, huge fish can lurk, but everyone gets excited and charges out there the next day and POOF! Fish are gone. Right place right time, but you never know. It's that time of year when anything can happen!
As well, pargo, big old toad bonito, some yellowtail, some floater squid, and cabrilla mixed in with roosterfish for quite a buffet choice of species. Late in the week, even some dorado came up to check out the pangas so get ready...things are cooking!
For our boats that went out of La Paz, the pargo and fat cabrilla are still the ticket. There was some excitement because some floating sargasso weed (Mexican kelp) was seen in the channel which usually means dorado could be around, but nothing produced. Still, that's a good sign!
It's warm! Bring the sunscreen and your shorts!

Fishing Report: WATERS COOLING BUT DORADO AND MARLIN STILL BITING - FIRST PERSON REPORTS -CALENDAR HEADS UP - PHOTO GALLERY
LATE SEASON DORADO STILL BITING WITH BILLFISH
Not much changing except that I can tell the water temps are cooling having dropped a degree or two the last few days. Surprisingly, however, the 82 degree water is outside of Las Arenas and the cooler 78 degree water is around La Paz. However, La Paz has the better and most consistent fishing with continued decent dorado action as well as blue and striped marlin still surprisingly good. Hard to believe it's almost the holiday season and we've still got 20-30 pound dorado around plus lots of small ones that I think is the reason the billfish are still around chewing on the punky mahi. Las Arenas, can still be a pick bite and a day-to-day thing with jags of pargo, dorado, bonito, sierra and occasional tuna. Also got some marlin and sailfish strikes this week that didn't stick.
It's a nice time to be in town. Not much of a crowd. Sunny skies and warm breezes. Tell ya what's real funny...here La Paz sits in a desert but Christmas stuff has been in the stores since September. However, there are Christmas tree lots springing up advertising Fresh Oregon Christmas Trees!

Fishing Report: WEATHER KEEPS US REELING BUT MARLIN DORADO BITE - FIRST PERSON REPORTS- WHAT IS THIS - PHOTO OF THE WEEK
WHAT NEXT?
If you've ever watched a boxing match where one of the fighters has taken too many hits to the head and you watch him stagger around the ring kind of loopy, but still swinging, that was us this week...and still going on as I write this!
Amigos, we got walloped again and again with combinations that kept us guessing from day to day when the next hit was coming. We still caught fish, but it was a struggle. If you fished this week with us you dealt with 3 storms in a row. We never got a hurricane in a face per se, but Hurricane Hillary stopped several hundred miles south of Cabo but still pushed enough wind and some rain our way to give us 8 foot swells on day and plenty of cloud cover. Right after that, we got tropical pain-in-the butt "E-9" (It didn't even rate a name), but it was enough to bring more clouds and wind; then we got "Tropical Depression Irwin" that is still lingering as I write this!
Add to the residual effects of a full moon...lack of live bait...water temps that dropped a few degrees and it was real recipe for big-apple-bendover-fishing...
We never had to cancel any trips, but for at least 4 of the last 7 days, it was pretty rough outside although guys continued to fish through the nastiness. Hat's off especially to Dan Fedorka's great group who refused

Fishing Report: when i left my dads at 4:00 am i was determined to catch a fish.weve had a split season up here and it was the opening day of the second half.we arrived at about five and were some of the first out.as we were leaving the bay we saw swarms of bait fish but the fish finder didnt satisfie our captain and freind Jesse Duncan. we left the bay and went out about 2.5 miles and dropped our rigs. me and jesse were usin, a hoochie with a 'chovie on the trailer. My dad john kalinowski was using a green thing that i dont know the name of that was simalar to a hoochie with a 'chovie. we trolled for two hours with no success but all the sudden we saw 15 boats right in front of us. as soon as we got within 1/4 mile away from them bam! my dad got hit he wasnt looking. "DAD DAD FISH FISH" i yelled. as soon as i did he quickly swiveled around and picked it up. the fish was still there. it fough hard for about 5-7 minutes he brought in a 7 1/2 pound 26 inch chinook. we plunged into the crowd fish were getting caught all around us. we went in for 15 minutes until we turned on the finder alot of bleeps but all down deep. "the only one who could get one would be zack(me)" said my dad. 1 2 3 bam! the drag was goin out on my rod after another 5 -7 minute battle before i brought in a 6 3/4 pound chinook. as we went for about 1 hour before jesse got his turn. he got hit hard and the fish was jumping like a silver but my dad and jess told me it was a 'nookie. the fight was longer than mine and dad's

WINDS COME UP AND DO A NUMBER ON THE FISHING
Ever go to the doctor for a routine check up thinking it's no big deal. You feel great. Nothing wrong. You go right in. You'll chit chat. BS a little with your doc. Get a lollypop on the way out and go on your way? Insetad, to your surprise, the doc pulls out the rubber gloves; you have to drop trou and walk down the hall in one of those little gowns with your backside showing and he does alot more to you than make you turn your head left and cough? Whole day ruined? Well...you know I like to tell ya the straight on how the fishing is. That's how I felt a good part of the week. That's what it was like this week and I guess "disappointed," can't begin to describe how I feel for some of the amigos that were here. Everyone fished HARD, but it was not real great. All the conditions had been good. The fishing had been getting better. Even the waters were finally warm. Bait was good. It was a dark moon (By the way...our BEST fishing this year has been on a FULL moon for anyone checking!).
It's sure was not great fishing here this past week. There were some hightlights, but for the most part it was scratchy fishing brought on by winds that came up and messed up the bait, the bite, the currents and alot of otherwise good fishing

Fishing Report: 4th OF JULY WEEK HAS CONSISTENT FISHING
Hope you all have a safe and outstanding 4th of July weekend. I'm typing this looking down on the La Concha hotel pool from my "office" and it's nice and all, but I surely miss 4th of July back in the states! They're making an "American buffet" for the holiday here at the restaurant and I know they'll have hot dogs and corn and there will be fireworks, but it's just not the same. I miss the parades, the smell of baked beans and fried chicken; potato salad; barbecue smoke at the park and at the beach; sticky cotton candy; the smell of fireworks; ribs stuck in my teeth and barbecue sauce on my shirt...
Anyway...onto fishing...
Its' hot and sweltering here now. Had a bit of a summer thunderstorm yesterday morning (Saturday), but otherwise, weather has been great with fairly good fishing all around although there's still more wind that I"d like to see for this time of year.
Waters seem well entrenched finally in the high 70's and lower 80's although the divers still tell me that not far below the surface, there's a 65 degree thermocline which could explain why we still have so many cold water species around on the chew. At Las Arenas, we had an off day on Saturday (yesterday) when that little thunderstorm blew in and made it rough to get bait and probably our most difficult fishing day in awhile However, there's still some decent wahoo to be caught with a few

Fishing Report: WARM WATER MOVES IN WITH FISH THEN MOVES OUT ! - WEEKLY PHOTO GALLERY - FLYFISHING/ LIGHT TACKLE EVENT - HUGE ROOSTERFISH PHOTO
FISH FINALLY KICK IN THEN COOL WATER CHILLS THE BITE...SOMEWHAT!
Thought we were finally cranked and tuned into the summer fishing. It was like clock work. I saw the satellite photos around La Paz and waters jumped into the low 80's and bam...the dorado finallly went off as did marlin and wahoo. Early in the week, lots of schoolie doradl and a handful of bulls were all over the baits. Then, late in the week, the warm water moved away from La Paz and back over to Cerralvo Island and the dorado bite petered out, but picked up instead around Las Arenas which remained a good spot for big roosterfish, striped marlin, pargo, amberjack, some African pompano, occasional wahoo and even some yellowfin tuna. It was definitely a good week for huge roosters with quite a few fish released in the 20, 30, 40, 50 and larger categories and several scaled that could not be released in the 60, 70 and even a 90 pounder.
We seem to have found a spot of tuna, but the captains are purposely not talking about it on the radio because too many of the East Cape boats listen on the same channels and would jam up to bogart the spots. It's not a big bite, but it's promising with a few fish in the 20-30 pound class and some larger fish starting to pop up. I"ll just tell you that it's on the Las Arenas side. Additionally,

Fishing Report: WATER TEMP RISE SEEMS TO SPUR FISH - FISH STORIES - FATHER'S DAY COLUMN - FLYFISHING / LIGHT TACKLE EVENT - PHOTOS
HAVE WE TURNED THE CORNER?
Sure seems like the place might finally be waking up. After several weeks where it seemed like we were stuck in springtime cool water fishing, it might finally be turning on. Despite pesky southern winds, over the last week-and-a-half, we've probably had one of the best wahoo and striped marlin bites in recent memories. Each day for the past 10 days at least several wahoo between 25 and 70 pounds have been caught and there are many other stories of bite offs or seeing schools of wahoo even swimming close to the beach. Larger baits on leaders; dark-colored Rapalas and Marauders have been extremely good. As for the marlin, there's still alot of them sitting lazily on the surface, but more of them have sure been willing to charge the baits...from tiny sardines to mackerel or trolled jigs than in the past weeks. Multiple hooks-ups have taken place in an area from northern Espiritu Santo Island to Muertos Bay far to the south. Additionally, we're sure seeing alot more dorado all over chasing flying fish although, again, they haven't always been willing to chew. However, each day it seems like a few more fish get caught ranging from punks to 35 pounders. There's just an incredible variety of fish in the water...amberjack and big pargo are still biting out of Las Arenas. Yellowtail, which are normally a
