Fishing Report: Well we have had our first cold front and it has really started the fish moving. The HUGE MANGROVE have moved from the deeper water on the edge of the reef to the patch reefs in around 25' of water. I fished a group from Orlando this week and our first and last stop was on a patch reef straight out in front of Biha Honda. We got anchored up on a sweet little reef in 25' of water, put some chum in the water and it was on. We started with small pinfish and the mangrove started to show. After boxing 4 or 5 in the 3lb range, the ballyhoo showed up in a big way, one throw of the net filled the livewell and the cooler, about 500 or so. We started to bait our 3/8 oz Z's Jigs with the live Ballyhoo and the Big Boys stepped up to the Dinner Table. We were able to put 20 or so fish in the box in the 5lb to 6lb range, (huge for mangrove). We were also lucky enough to catch 15 or so Grouper, although only 1 made the size limit, it was a 24" Red, nice fish !!!! Also showing up in the chum slick were good amounts of Yellowtail a few of which were large enough to eat whole Ballyhoo, Cero and King mackeral, Mutton none large enough for me to keep although they did make the legal size. There have also been good amounts of Gaffer Dolphin on the edge of the reef, moving up and down the Color Change. SailFish have also started to make their yearly apperance a little bit early. All the Captains are hopping the stars align like they did last year. What we need is a good cold snap in the area

Fishing Report: Fall fishing is comming alive in the Keys. Offshore - The Sword fishing has picked up in the last two weeks, as the fish continue to move back down toward the West onto their usual winter haunts. Two or more fish caught in a day is becoming the norm as the fish move back into the area. If you have never tried daytime Sword fishing, you really ought to. There is nothing like dropping a huge squid 1800 feet, right onto their address and finding out that someone is home. What a rush !!!!! The Blackfin Tuna on the hump are very receptive to the netfulls of Pilchards being thrown around. They are also moving back onto their winter haunts which in Marathon is the flats. It is a lot easier to cast net the Pilchards on the flats in the morning or evenings, than it is to go out on the reef at night to catch them which is the case all Summer. The Dolphin fishing is very spotty, although I was able to find plenty this Saturday. They were pretty thick just inside the Marathon Hump this weekend in the 5 to 10lb range. I was also lucky enough to find four Frigate Birds dogging a pair of decent size Dolphin, and I was able to get them to eat a couple of trolled CJ Squids and take them for a boat ride. Far Gulf - The Far Gulf Wrecks continue to be Red Hott. On a trip out there last week the Permit and Cobia were very cooperative. As I was pulling up to the first wreck located aprox 35 miles Northwest of marathon, a school of very large permit swam right up to the boat and were very happy

Fishing Report: First of all I would like to thank Jim and Sherri Trice and all those who helped put this event together.
Ken and I started the morning great, by 7:30am Ken landed a nice bonefish and 300 points on the board. We had a few more good shots at bonefish but the tide was turning and it was time for us to head deeper into Florida Bay and look for some redfish. We found a few and had shots, pulled some hooks and just plain unlucky. Thats the name of the game. 11 out of 37 teams got bonefish and 9 got the redfish bonefish slam. Congrats to all the winners!
Ken and I had a great time even though the redfish tortured us but we will be looking forward to next year and another fun event.
On another note, there has been plenty of small tarpon around in the backcountry. These fish are fun on artificial or fly and can be a challenge to get to the boat at times with there acrobatic jumps and bony mouths making it hard to stay connected. The deeper shorelines and islands have been tough due too the south south east winds we have had.
The redfish and snook have been up on the flats and runoffs were you can find some clean water holding bait. The right presentation making your artificial/fly look as natural as possible is the key to getting these fish in the skinny water to eat.

Fishing Report: Last night I took my client out to target Tarpon. We caught tarpon however, the biggest thrill of the night was the 175 lb tarpon who rose to the surface numerous times. What a great time. It took my client 1 hour and 15 minutes to reel the monster to the boat!

Fishing Report: Its been hot out there. The temperature has been blazing hot and the fishing has been on fire. The weather for the past few days has been good with mainly clear skies and not a drop of wind making for some excellent sightfishing. The Redfish have been up on the flats tailing, sitting and pushing wakes on the flats all day. The Snook have been sitting in the potholes waiting for a mullet to come by and hammer it. Yesterday we had some good shots at Tarpon between 30-80lb but we could not seal the deal. In between we have been catching plenty of Trout with some nice Snappers mixed in. This week the hot bait has been the 3" gulp shrimp rigged weedless for the fish on the flats or on a 1/4 ounce jig for the fish in deeper water. Remember when sightfishing the key to capitalizing is to make your your bait look as natural as possible and being as stealthy as can be.
The fishing is hot right now, give me a call and lets go fishing!

Fishing Report: It has been a long time since I have seen so many tailers. I am talking 100 plus bonefish, and I am not telling a fish tale. A week ago I took my wife out for some fun fishing and we saw 30 plus fish. Then I was booked with a man named Arthur who had never caught a bonefish (not for the lack of trying) before and we caught two. We could have caught much more but please when you want to target a fish such as the elusive bonefish you NEED to work on your cast length as well as your accuracy.
Bonefishing is done by site fishing. It takes an expereienced guide to spot these fish as they tail on the flats. We caught these bonefish with shrimp laid out perfectly just beyond the fish and slowly reeling the shrimp to present it just infront of the bonefishes face.

Fishing Report: Finally warmed up and the fishing was great last weekend. I had the pleasure of spending the day with Tim and Rhonda. They were a blast.. It was their first time flats fishing. They said they did not care what we went for as long as they caught a lot of fish on fly.... OK.. Fly fishing in the Florida Keys is a lot more challenging then trout in a western stream, but we came up with a plan for lots of fish. First we hit some coral heads for snapper and grouper...then got some shots at permit.. then beat up on lady fish. After boating a bunch of fish we decided to try some classic Keys style sight fishing.. Got some shots at some nice permit on the flats, then switched to tarpon. We got 4 tarpon to eat toad flies... Rhonda got three baby tarpon to eat a toad fly. The end of the day we found 5 to 6 foot tarpon floating in some warm up water.. could not see them until we were very close.. one ate a toad fly and several others followed it right to the boat.
The next day a cold front hit.. I am sitting in mt apartment typing next to the space heater. It is March.. Great fishing in between fronts. Looks like the weather will improve towards the end of the week.

Fishing Report: On Thursday of last week I fished a fellow out of central Jersey named Bill Malesdina, great guy. We left from the dock at Big Time Bait and Tackle in Marathon on the Little Green Machine, a 20' Custom built Bay Skif for a trip on the Gulf Wrecks. We started the day fishing a wreck 18 miles from Marathon using live bait on spinning tackle. The Mangroves, Grouper, Lane Snapper, Jew Fish, Mackeral and Jacks were all happy to accept our offering of Pinfish and Shrimp. We spent almost the whole day on the same wreck and the rods were bent about 90% of the time. With the fish box almost full we decided to head towards home with one last stop at Seven Mile Bridge. We fished the West end and found more fat happy Mangroves which we treated to dinner and took them for a boat ride. The wind was variable and the water was flat calm, it was a great day for a trip in the small boat which kept it very affordable for a single person charter, the boat is set up perfect for fishing 2 people and has a huge fore deck with no protrusions so it is perfect for fly fishing. We have been fun fishing the last few evenings for Tarpon that are already starting to show up in good numbers, if this keeps up it promises to be a phenominal Tarpon season. The Permit should show up in huge numbers on the ocean side wrecks the 2nd or 3rd week of April if they keep their normal schedule. Dolphin are at the edge of the reef out to about 450', but mostly concentrated in 125' to 225', most are nice fish in the

Fishing Report: I fished a family out of the Lake Summit area this week and had a great time. The wind was comming out of the Northeast at 15 but the heading to and from the area we fished allowed us to trough the waves both in and out and the ride was fine in our 27' Center Console. That is the best thing about chartering and guiding in the keys there is always some kind of fishing you can do no matter what the wind is doing, Offshore, Reef, Gulf Wreck, Bridge, Flats, you even have the option of fishing the inside and outside of the everglades up in the Flamingo area which is only a short boat ride from Marathon. I choose to start our day on a steel pile about 16 miles Northwest from Marathon and it was a fine choice, after dropping in the chum bag we started to hook up right away. my clients were a husband and wife, her mother and their 13 year old son Andy who was quite a fisherman, what he lacked in knowledge he made up for with his enthusiam, that day he earned the title of Grouper Man. He caught and released at least a dozen nice Gag, Red and Goliath Grouper along with his share of oversized Mangrove Snappers, Mackeral, Puffers, Bluefish, Blue Runners and assorted Jacks, his rod was bent most of the day. Mom, Cindy and Dad Todd and even Grandmom stayed busy picking away at the Snappers. At the end of the day the score was 25 nice Snappers around 3 pounds and up, a bunch of mackeral and smiles all around. Un fortunetly we had to release all of the Grouper even the keeper size ones due

Fishing Report: On Saturday the wind finally died and the water flattened out and the bite was on. I fished three really great guys from Connecticit, Joe, Keith and Pete, these guys own a Piper Malibu and on a whim just loaded up and flew away from the cold and down to the Keys for some fun and fishing. They found me at the local tackle store in Marathon, Big Time Bait and Tackle and hired me to guide them to a day of fishing for Cobia in the Gulf. The first stop was 26 miles out at the Salty Dog wreck and the Cobia were nonexistent, the only action we had was about 5 Blacktip Sharks. After about an hour we pulled anchor and headed over to the J Steel Pile and set ancho, the Mangroves came up in the chum right away and than the Grouper made an apperance we caught 1 Red and several Gags, also lots of Mackeral and Bluefish. About an hour in and 2 Cobia swam up to the chum bag and Pete was able to feed one a Pinfish and the fight was on as Pete fought the fish I started to look around their rental boat for a net or a gaff, no luck. It was just about that time that about the first 18" of Petes brand new St. Croix rod snapped of and ended up down at the buisness end of the line with the fish. As Pete brought the cobia boatside I put on a pair of gloves, reached down into the water and lipped the Cobia and grabbed him by the tail with my other hand and tossed him into the boat, unbeiliveable !!!!! About that time Joe 2 more swam up to the boat and Joe hooked up and than Keith was able to feed the

Fishing Report: Wind and more wind... The last week we have been faced with NE wind. This wind keeps the water temps cool, the sky blue. Cooler water temps make for some tougher fishing, but blue skies make for some great visibility when sight fishing on the flats. Fortunately here in the lower keys we have lots of leeward shore lines and protected flats to fish out of the wind. On the days when the wind has laid down a little we have been able to hunt baby tarpon. On the warmer days between fronts we are finding full size tarpon laid up in basins and rolling in the channels. The last several days has been a mixed bag of permit, redfish, snook, barracuda, jacks and sharks.
Montana Outfitter Mike Kuhnert with Evoulution Fly Fishing boated his first permit and jumped a tarpon this week. Way to go Mike!
