Fishing Report: 10/19 & 20 - WEATHER CHANGE

Left out on Monday with Nick W. and it was "freezing". Don't know how cold it was, But it was cold enough that I had the heavy woolies on all day long. But that's not a bad thing. I wanted it and and I like it, though. Change is GOOD.
THE WIND....now that was another story!
Our faces were beat red, from the suns glare and wind. But we didn't see much sun till almost noon.
By days end it had to be gusting over 20 knots out of the NNE. And made for a serious struggle all day long. Anchoring was a real pain, and staying anchored was even tougher on many hard bottom spots. Then, the current of the New Moon was a real blaster. But we prevailed.
The big fish was a 23 inch Trout, that I caught. We worked from down river to the Mayport area. And later in the day we poked our way close enough to the jetties to see the North rocks being washed over with white water coming from the ocean side.
Here's a few pics of the day.

Fishing Report:
We're now in the depths of summer and the tropical storms are cranking up. We've had cold water along the coast most of the summer caused by prevailing SW winds. Recent SE winds should warm the coastal waters and improve the tarpon fishing, which has been hit or miss. There have been plenty of pogies along the beach all summer, just very few tarpon feeding on them. I did find some tarpon crashing pogies a couple of days ago, but could not hook up.
If you want to fish the creeks, fish them early and late when the predators are not too lethargic and more likely to take a bait. Soaking crab, mullet, or mud minnows along the oyster bars should work for the reds. Surface plugs and Cajun Thunder rigs will also take reds and trout. The edges of the ICW can be productive for good size reds and trout. You have to fish early to avoid the boat traffic as well as the heat and afternoon storms.
Some early arriving bull redfish can be found up-river along the channel edges at the turn of the tide. Blue crab, croakers, or pogies are good choices for bait. There are some slot and oversize reds along the jetties, but the action is spotty. Slot fish and rat reds are in the ICW and its creeks.
There are lots of ladyfish and jacks in the river now. I had the pleasure of guiding anchorman Dan Rather, his son, and grandsons for three days this past week. They wore out the ladyfish and had a mixed bag of trout, reds,

Fishing Report: 8/21 - BIG FAT RAIN
While towing a boat today, it rained. At one point I couldn't see the bow of the boat I was on, it was so dark and coming down so hard, at 5:00pm.
Here's going under the Dames Point Bridge, after it backed off. Sheets of water were pouring thru the drain holes up on the bridge. Looked really cool in person.

Fishing Report: Cocoa Beach Fishing Report
July 2009
July is here and it is hot folks with the temps in the high 90's. But the fishing is just as hot for this month with the cool morning, and late afternoon bite being the best. Anglers this month put some great fish in the boat. Finding the bait pods at first light was the key to success. On most days anglers found schools of tailing redfish in the super shallow waters of the Mosquito Lagoon and north Indian River Lagoon.. These fish are pushing 5-40 pounds, with schools up to 200 fish. Casting a small top water bait like the baby skitter walk from Rapala is the key to big top water strikes. The trout bite has been strong early in the morning, and there are still plenty of black drum to cast to on the shallow flats.
Down south in the Sebastian area of the Indian River lagoon the snook bite has been pretty good this month. And with the full moon moving in at the end of the month, the night fishing should be excellent. We are starting to see a good number of bait pods like finger mullet, and small white baits starting to grow thicker. The fall mullet run is around the corner, and should be a good one this year.
And with snook season opening next month anglers should see some great action. The tarpon are still in the back creeks, but have become picky over the past couple of weeks due to the full moon. The best bet this time of year is to book a night trip and

6/10 - Fishing in a Aquarium!
****View report with all 13 photos:

Had Tim A. from Tampa back on board the "JETTYWOLF" today, and he'll be back on board again Thursday too.
We have so much fun....it's almost like I thought this "guiding gig" was supposed to be. One angler and me, out huntin' them up, fishing together, learning and looking for that pattern. But solo passenger charters are not the norm.
Yes, I do a single passenger charter for those who really want to get versatile, flexible and experimental, or just learn one on one. I believe for what you get, my solo charter rate is really a good deal. And Tim always does two days!
We fished in an Aquarium today. Had Tarpon all around us for a few hours, Manatees, schools of big Jack Crevalle, Sea Turtles, bait fish galore, Cow nosed Rays, and Redfish under us, and the water was so clean and clear we could see most of them!
The Tarpon? Well, we hoped for this years first hook up. But being one of the finickiest fish that swim for us here in N.E. Florida. I just keep on float rig fishing and if we hooked one I'll deal with it when it happens. We weren't "chum

6/19 - Beach, Jetties, River......oh no!!
Had Dave C. from Virginia out with me again. Dave always fishes as a solo person. And we always have fun. He enjoys the water and the pursuit of the fish as much as catching.

Thought I'd mix it up a bit. So I took the Kingfish rods with me today. Here's what I figured....
First thing this morning, get some Pogies and run out to the S.E. Hole/Spoil Area/Chum hole and do some of that "el boro" live bait going really slow, trolling. Hey, but it's a change!!
So as we passed the old Sea Turtle Inn from behind the breakers with out seeing a single "flip-n -splat" of a single Pogie, right then were at the extent of my chase for live baits. I usually will not waste any more time. PERIOD. But heck, we were going "slow trolling".....
So we ended up at the Red Tops. Still no Pogies! Yep, good ole Bazaaro World Florida is at it again. How do people put up with this all summer long?? I just do not know.

6/11 - Redbass Redbass Redbass, Tarpon....
You may call'em Redfish or even Red Drum....and you are totally correct. But if you're a Jacksonville Cracka' they're Redbass! And Tim A. and I on our second trip together WORE THEM REDBASS, OUT. Is that, THEY WORE US OUT! (or was it the serious heat, that did that. YES, it was hot and humid and Tim and I were whooped.)
Granted, we fished the perfect tide for this type of fishing . Don't expect your day to be exactly like these two days with Tim, unless you planned ahead, and consulted with me about tides.
After yesterday's encounter with at least 17 Redbass up to 30 or so inches. Today, turned out to be even better. Tim bested himself early, and caught a 32 incher. Then, there's all those Tarpon out rolling around taunting us. Well, we just hoped to get a hook-up and maybe a catch yesterday. But today I had a plan. While we float-rigged with our live shrimp for the Reds, I would take a designated rod, with a fluorocarbon leader, a strong hook and have a big live shrimp under a small cork. I let it out, engaged the reel and stuck it in the rod holder and Tim and I just fished.

Fishing Report: Well, against my better senses, I decided to take a quick romp out today in the ICW / creeks to see what's stirring. Weather has been horrible all week, rain, rain and more rain, some places got well over 20 inches of rain I hear. Needless to say, the creeks are well saturated with fresh water and the fishing wasn't too good in them. You know it's going to be a bad day when they won't even hit stank shrimp.
We decided to take it out into the ICW, the water was a bit choppy, we were real close to the St Johns river so that didn't help either. We ended up mooring on our favorite trout flats and seeing what was shaking. The trout were there, they were feeding in the shallows, we seen them but they were not really biting too hard on the bait. I tried arty's, dead shrimp, live shrimp, finger mullet (caught a red, but only 17 inches), blue crab, (caught another red 17.5 inches) and finally mud minnows started bringing the trout in. We ended up with only two legal trout around 18 inches out of 7 caught, even then, the bite was off. Im having a feeling that the fresh water is not helping much, and the storm still in the area and still raining off and on isn't adding to it. Talking to other boaters, I am hearing a lot of the same story, the creeks are shot, and deeper waters are not doing too much better. The jetties are supposedly doing fairly well, as is the river but it's rather choppy, NOT good for a flats boat and the jetties, ... NO.... The full

Fishing Report: Pics and details - http://www.digitalfathom.com/FishingBlog/JacksonvilleOffshoreFishing.html
Another GREAT weekend of fish has passed. Hopefully the front that just pushed through won't ruin the great dolphin run we have been having.
We put the Bluewater 2550 in at the Vilano boat ramp at 5am Saturday morning. We were fishing the Northeast Florida Marlin Association's Open Invitational. The forecast was for 4-6' foot seas and it was dead on. The ride out for the first 20 miles wasn't too bad. The 25 Bluewater handled the 3ft sloppy swell great at 25knots. As we got further out the seas got worse and eventually only made 18 knots to get out to the fish.
The long ride paid off. We went through 3 dozen ballyhoo. With 1 sea sick person it was just 2 of us trying to get a tournament winning dolphin or marlin. 3 times we had all 6 rods go off at once. It was fun to say the least. We brought home about 15 dolphin with the biggest weighing in at 38 pounds. A couple pounds bigger and we would have placed in the tournament.
A big congrats goes out to Tim Martin, Corey Maire and the reason of the Lit Up crew for releasing their second Blue Marlin in just a few weeks off of St. Augustine. They were fishing in 1000' of water east of St Aug.
Get out there while the fish are here! A lot of other boats had mahi catches upwards of 40 fish! There were quite a few big bulls caught over 40 pounds as well!

Fishing Report: After all the winds and canceled days due to the wind lately, I was so glad to be offshore again! The ocean started nasty but ended nicely before the day was out. We had a day to remember today. We limited out on red snapper up to 10 1/2 pounds (several throwbacks), caught a mangrove snapper, a lane snapper, 16 vermillion snapper, a trigger fish, a 32lb cobia, a few grouper that were too short, and a bull shark that came in at close to 200lb. What a fight, and we tied together some great team work to put it in the boat without a pistol :) I had a great time with a great crew and I look forward to the next trip. Happy Birthday Diana!! We kept the rods bent!!

Fishing Report: The ocean was a lake this morning. There was only about a 1-2 foot swell and it stayed that way all day with a slight breeze from the south. Absolutely gorgeous! I like it when the weather man screws up in my favor. it still doesn't even out though. We hammered the beeliners today. It seemed like everywhere we stopped, beeliners were there. We had to work for the snapper but the crew got their limit with 8 red snapper, we had a boat limit on beeliners with 50, a couple triggerfish, a few black sea bass, a big spanish mackeral, and a bunch of sharks. We kept the rods bent all day and the trash talking lasted all day. What a great time.

Fishing Report: What does a man have to do to get a break in the weather? Well after watching the wind over the past couple weeks and the storms over the past couple days; and seeing the 90% rain chance for today, my hopes of today being my window were dwindling fast! Here's the deal; I had the perfect crew pending. They wanted to go as bad as I did so I was watching the weather very closely and began to see a northeasterly shift in the storm cell which gave me hope. At 5am this morning I called Erik and told him the storms were north of us, that they appeared to be continuing north, and we had our window and it was on! Of course I had satellite weather on board to keep a close eye on any developing systems and every safety precaution was observed!! I decided to go out of St. Augustine which would give us even more of a buffer between us and the storm system and it was a good decision. The seas were glassy and the wind was minimal (for a minute!!) I went to a spot I hadn't been to in a while and that one spot is all it took. Between 8:30 and 10:30 we had 10 red snapper (released several shorts), 4 vermillion snapper, 2 lane snapper, a short mutton snapper, 2 gag grouper (18lbs each), several sharks, a triggerfish, and a 15lb cobia. The wind really picked up about double what the 10kt forecast was, and the seas began building as a result so I made the executive decision to cut our losses and head to the hill. Made it back to the dock at 11:45 with a fish box full of fish!! Great trip
