Fishing Report: Bill Story and friends, Mike, Dave, Jim, Marvin and Ed picked a nice calm morning to fish offshore with me on Tuesday, 10/28. We headed out of New Pass about eighteen miles and fished in 43 feet with live shrimp. The guys were after pan-fish for a fish-fry they planned for this week, and we did well to fill their table with keeper lane snapper, mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper, grunts, Spanish mackerel and porgies of the whitebone and jolthead varieties. We released lots of smaller snapper, as well as short triggerfish and red grouper.
The photo shown is of angler Adam Koenigsmark, with a 34-inch king mackerel, caught on a sand perch on a recent offshore trip.
I fished inshoremost of my recent trips--aseparate report and pic will follow.

Fishing Report: “The River Runs Red”
If you read my reports on a regular basis you know I like to fish in and around Charlotte Harbor if at all possible. Charlotte Harbor oddly enough doesn’t get as much fishing pressure as some other surrounding areas. In most cases when I pick up a group for the day, I start out at Punta Rassa and make the run north to Redfish Pass, however today I tried the Caloosahatchee. My first thought was to stay close to the mouth of the river thinking the fish haven’t really began the migration up the river to the winter haunts, boy was I wrong. I saw great numbers of schooly sized Snook stacked up everywhere there was a break in the current all around 22” to 26” inches, nothing worth casting at. The real action started around Cape Harbor with large schools of Reds cruising the flats. I tossed greenbacks, pinfish, and shrimp at these bruisers with no luck. I checked the tide chart again and realized I had about another hour before the tide would turn and begin to ebb. So to pass the time I decided to boat a few small Snook, and that was fun enough but I had my eye on the giant Reds I saw earlier. Once the tide turned I went back to the spot I saw the red and they were still there. I pitched a greenback, nothing! I pitched a pinfish, nothing! I pitched a shrimp, nothing! Perplexed I pulled out a 3in. white Gulp bait with a quarter ounce head and pitched to the trailing monsters , FISH ON! I found the bait. During this time of year you have to be

Fishing Report: "Seeing Red"
Season hasn’t begun, and the charter business is a little slow but the fishing is red hot. This time of year really excites me, with October being a transition month anything is possible. The old standby’s are here in large numbers, and they are hungry. I began yesterday as any other day in beautiful South West Florida with a trip to my favorite bait haunt inside Cayo Costa State Park. The bait wasn’t as easy to get today as most days but after what seemed to be a hundred casts of the net and an empty chum bucket I was finally able to fill my wells. The bait came in all shapes and sizes, a lot of small Whitebait and a lot of pin fish were the order of the day. I quickly ran to Useppa Island where I’ve seen large numbers of Red Fish cruising around the Oyster bars. The key to success this time of year is a quite approach and a long cast. I prefer using 10 lb. braid with 20lb leader. Dropping the size of your gear helps when casting long distance. It wasn’t long before we had a tournament sized Red boat side, and when there’s one, there’s a hundred. October is great for large schools of Redfish but you have to be careful, always try to pick the fish off the back side of the school to avoid spooking the rest. If your approach is quite and you can make the long cast, then it’s all over with. When everything works out just right, you could easily boat 40 Redfish in a morning. Snook seem to be moving away from the passes and into the mangroves, DEEP in the

Fishing Report: SANIBEL FISHING
The fishing in the Sanibel Island area this week has been great!
We just had a cool front, that finally dropped the temperatures.
The weather man says more cool weather is on the way.
This is a great time of year to get some fishing in before the water gets cold.
Thanksgiving is on the way and most guides get booked around the holiday.
Snook, Redfish, Seatrout, Spanish Mackerel, Grouper, and Snapper, are all being caught. Bait is still easy to find.
As the water temperatures fall and more cold fronts push through, most fish will move into the back bay areas.
Fishing in shallow water, and pushing around from a polling platform, is a great idea to sneak up on the big one.
Hunting is in full swing and the Rut is near! Many of my clients are avid hunters. I’m also going to post pictures of some of my clients with their recent trophy’s.
For more information about fishing in the Sanibel area give me a call at 239 822 5698 or visit www.tarpoons.com
See ya on the water!

Fishing Report: The recent front that came through last weekend brought a lot of wind and brought the inshore waters down to the mid to upper 70's. We had to wait a few days for the wind to let up, but the bite was fantastic once we could get out to wet a line. The morning low tides combined with the wind blowing from the east made it difficult to get into the backcountry in the morning.
Due to the low tides we have been fishing the flats early until we were able to move in and look for red fish. The shallow flats provided us with non stop rod bending action. Good numbers of trout,Spanish mackerel, blue fish, lady fish, cobia and more are pulling drag in 2 - 6 ft. of water. There are a number of tactics that will produce fish in these depths this time of year. GULP shrimp, silver spoons, and hard baits like a Rapala Twitch n' Rap are all great options. The trout have been small on average but the bigger ones seem to be hitting top water plugs. A bone colored Heddon Zara Spook Jr. is one that seems to put some nice trout in the cooler. The daily bag limit for trout in our area is 5 per person - They may be NO LESS than 15" and one of the 5 may be kept over 20".
The backcountry areas North of Bayport are continuing to hold large numbers of upper slot sized reds. I find the best bite continues to be at the start of a out going tide. Schools of reds are spread out the entire region and are moving with schools of mullet. Live pin fish and cut mullet

Sarasota Florida Fishing Report

Finally some cooler weather is coming our way! As we see the Gulf water temperature drop, we should see the fishing improve. When the water temperature is in the low seventies, I think that is the best for all around fishing. For now, we have some seatrout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, Jacks, ladyfish, and an occasional flounder in the shallow water on the Middle Ground grass flats. Live pilchards, shrimp and the DOA artificial 3” shrimp are some of the baits that have been working well.
The best methods of fishing the grass have been free-line or popping cork and drifting or anchoring or a little of both. I like the Eagle Claw 202, Size 4/0, Gold Aberdeen hook for fishing with live bait on the flats. About 3 or 4 feet of 30 pound test clear mono leader on 10 to 12 pound test line and you have a very good grass-flats rig. Of course ultra-light and fly also will work well, but you may need to upgrade your skill level.
We have had some slow days fishing lately, but on the whole, the summer was good inshore and offshore. More than I can say for the economy.
We should see the King mackerel start offshore this month and the pompano and blue action should pickup on the bay. Things start to happen when the weather starts to change.
Enjoy & Protect

Fishing Report: Boca Grande, Fl
14 Oct. 2009
Current fishing conditions dictated an afternoon bite. The tides are high in the morning and our best action was from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Seatrout, redfish and snook were the target species. Ron Whiteley of Rotunda, Fl. caught redfish to 30 inches on Estaz marabou flies in north Gasparilla Sound near the Boca Grande Causeway. He also caught snook to 25 inches in the same area. Redfish schools were found in Placida Harbour and the large grass flat east of Cayo Pelau. These fish took Puglisi flies in grey and white. Numerous seatrout to 25 inches fell to Gartside Gurglers near Sand Fly Key in Charlotte Harbour. Ron and I caught seatrout to 25 inches just east of Rabbit Key with a Gartside Gurgler. I saw several Pompano skipping while crossing the deeper flats but did not catch any. Trust me, I will. An approaching cold front will make fish feed well this week. The days after the front will be slow until the pressure moderates. Target redfish on the flats and tailing on the young flood tide. Snook will feed best on the early outgoing tide. Seatrout will feed best on the bottom of the tides.

Fishing Report: The days have been hot the past week, but the water temperature is staying in the low 80's. We have a front moving through this weekend but it appears that it is going to bring more wind than cold air. The fishing out of Hernando Beach has been fantastic the past week. We have been catching a mixed bag of quality fish.
The backcountry bite is really starting to peak. Good numbers of red fish, snook, and trout are being caught on a variety of baits. The many bays and creeks North of Bayport have been holding a a lot of fish that are on the move and feeding. Target areas that have structure like oyster bars and mangroves on the start of a out going tide. One tactic that I feel produces the most fish is to set up within casting distance from these points and offer baits like cut mullet, cut pin fish or live pin fish. I prefer to use a cork so I can see the strike. Use a 3/0 - 4/0 circle hook with a 20 - 30 lb. mono leader. When your cork disappears, slowly reel down until you feel the weight of the fish and let the circle hook do its job. Circle hooks allow anglers to get a good hook set in the corner of the mouth. This not only reduces the number of break offs, but it makes it easy to get the hook out of the fish. This allows anglers to get back to fishing quicker and reduces the risk of a gut hook which will injure or kill the fish.
TIP- Keep a few lady fish to use as chum. If my clients start catching lady fish, I always put a few

Fishing Report: Boca Grande, Fl
28 Sept 09
Outstanding fishing this week in Boca Grande was highlighted by large snook, baby tarpon and an abundance of seatrout. There is no better time of the year than the fall on Florida's west coast. Unusually high tides in the morning produced strong water movement as the days went on. Baitfish shoals grew larger and the fish fed aggressively.
Dusty Sprague and I were able to jump four little tarpon in the deep backcountry on Thursday and then managed several snook along the mangroves. All were taken on a modified Gartside Gurgler pattern. Switching to a submerged fly because of the bright sun, we caught several seatrout in just a few minutes to finish up a fun and exciting day.
Dennis Kowal, a famous artist from Sarasota, caught false albacore and Spanish mackerel about two miles off Gasparilla Pass on Friday. Huge shoals of anchovies were attacked by these marauders. Follwed by Capt. Al White, we moved to the backcountry to catch more of the seatrout we found the day before. We all joioned up with Ron Whiteley and Dusty Sprague for a splash in the pool and a cold libation at Ron's house. Another damn fine day.
Harry Davis and his fishing buddy Ron, from Dalton, Ga. fished fly and top water plugs on Sunday morning with great success, except for the tarpon. Ron caught a giant redfish, several seatrout and a half dozen snook to 32 inches. Harry, the best plug fisherman I've ever had on board, just hammered

Fishing Report: I have several beach fishing trips to report on this week. Had a guide trip with local angler Llew Williams of the Naples fishing club and friend Dr. Mark on the 19th, did some fun fishing for myself on the 22nd, and another Naples guide trip the 24th with local anglers Brian Hull and friend Barry. Overall, it has been a difficult week. Low water during prime time (morning), and a very high tide later on coupled with some abnormally dirty water made things tough. In fact, the water down south of the pier right now is downright gross.
We spent about 10 minutes there this morning then took off northbound. The northern beaches are much cleaner. This has to be due to heavy rains earlier in the week pumping out of the Gordon River. A few Snook were hooked, many more sighted, along with over abundant fly-stealing Ladyfish, and a few run-ins with some big Jacks to the 10lb class.
I had a great time coaching on casting and technique to a few fly anglers just starting out. Small flies and extremely precise, delicate presentations were a must this week to garnish any interest. October is usually a great month overall, with the water and weather cooling off a touch. Look for the fishing to be good again once we get past this little "weird period" in a few more days. Until then, I'm off to guide in Stuart a couple days next week!

Fishing Report: Boca Grande, Fl.
19 Sept. 2009
Anglers fishing with me this week enjoyed outstanding fishing for seatrout, snook and redfish. The most exciting fish were snook on top water poppers.
Our biggest was 29 inches taken by Dusty Sprague of North Port, Florida on a modified Gartside Gurgler. Other great catches included Dennis Kowal's
first redfish on a fly (see pix), Al White's redfish and Ron Whiteley's 22 inch seatrout. Dennis used a shrimp imitation copied from a Tim Borski design.
Al, a fishing guide friend, used a custom designed Puglisi to take a nice red on a tough day.
Early this week we enjoyed morning overcast skies and strong tides. All of which made for great fishing. On these days we caught fish everywhere we
went. Dusty Sprague caught seven snook on top water on one day. By the weekend, the weather turned bright adn warm under high pressure. The
fishing was very slow until the top of the tide around 12:00 noon. Even then it was not as good as the early week days.
This demonstrates how we are at the mercy of the weather. Cold fronts, clear blue skies and strong winds always make fishing tough. So... it is the luck
of the draw when fishing. Picking the best days means being diligent about the forecast and taking advantage of the best conditions at a moments notice.
It is a comfort to know

Fishing Report: The first of the month continued with very warm waters and temperatures. A couple of positive signs are evident. The days are getting shorter and there are millions of small bait fish (sardines or white bait) everywhere. As the days get shorter, the amount of intense sunshine baking the flats and shallow waters is considerably less. This gives the bays and backwaters more time to cool down during evening hours. Also the fish react to shorter days by changing their migration patterns and feeding habits to coincide with the coming fall season. Snook will start moving off the beaches to inhabit the mangrove shore lines and barrier islands. Redfish will start to push and gang up on the flats next to most of the same mangrove shore lines. All fish will be feeding on many herds of small fry baits that seem to be on every flat, along channel edges and under all the bridges. I call this size bait "next month's bait". Just a little too small to use now, 1 1/2 to 2 inches, but in four to five weeks, they will be the perfect size, 3 to 4 inches. Use the top of the incoming tide and get up on those flats right next to the mangroves, and search along the shallows. Look for very active waters such as lots of mullet schools and bait fish in the area.
This is exactly the approach I used with Bernard, from Orlando. He joined Salt Aire for some inshore fishing and possibly his first redfish. He brought his fly rod for maybe a shot at that first redfish. We were able to get up on the
