Fishing Report:   This fisherman, Rev. Martin Salvatore Murphy did on Saturday May sixteen (16) of two thousand nine (2009) catch a twenty-seven (27) inch largemouth bass while standing on a small bridge located on the road known as Maple Ridge by the lake known as Cobbosseecontee around six (6) pm or eighteen hundred (1800) hours during a period of overcast conditions with a slight breeze.

The equipment used by Rev. Murphy includes one (1) Torsion Quantum IM6 rod which is a six (6) foot one (1) piece with a medium action rated for a line weight between eight (8) and seventeen (17) and a lure weight between one quarter (1/4) and three quarter (3/4). The rod is equipped with a Pinnacle LP100 Platinum Plus bait-caster which was spooled with fourteen (14) pound Stren braided with an Eagle Claw barrel swivel with interlock snap which was used to connect the yellow three quarter (3/4) Booyah spinner.

Mrs. Barbara J. Murphy Photographed the fish five (5) times using Rev. Murphy's cell-phone which is a Motorola Motorazr2(tm) V8.

The largemouth bass was also witnessed by one (1) neighbour in addition to Mrs. Murphy prior to its release back into the waters.

The Largemouth bass was not weighed. However, using charts available on the inter-net or the formula length x length x length / 1600 an estimated weight of twelve point three zero one eight seven five (12.301875) pounds can be achieved (27x27x27/1600=12.301875).

Fishing Report:   Things are really looking up for the opening day of Maine's trout and salmon season as well as the Granite State's salmon and lake trout season. In Massachusetts, there are no closed seasons for these fish but early stocking efforts by their aggressive fisheries division usually produce some great early fishing, often in shoreside areas that are clear of ice. Note that New Hampshire's rivers are mostly open to fishing from January first to October 15, so they have seen some fishing pressure already.

Some of the coastal ponds and streams are already clearing of ice while not far inland, ice is soft and showing signs of a possible early break-up.

“With the first day of April signaling the opening of the trout and salmon season, there are a few opportunities currently but almost all the ponds and lakes still have an ice cover. Those things can change quickly and when they do, water temperature will make the difference in your success,” according to Chad Woodward at Kittery Trading Post's Fishing Department.

“Even in moving water, water temperatures and the effect cold water has on fish, especially trout and salmon, are key to having some action. In rivers and streams, because the fish are sluggish, they will not want to be fighting any current so they will seek shelter from it along the shoreline or in front of or behind structure. Often they will gather in shallow depressions that allow for the main currents to flow

Fishing Report:   This being the last Kittery Trading Post Fishing Report of the 2008 season, we’ll be concentrating on not so much what happened last week, but keying in on the opportunities for late season angling, in both the fresh and saltwater, inland and coastal areas. Because information is a bit sketchy as fishing pressure has dropped considerably, this report will be a bit more compact.

“If you’re fishing the freshwater lakes and ponds, much of your late-season success will depend on water temperature,” suggests Joe Hutter at Kittery Trading Post’s Fishing Department.

“In the spring, finding water temperatures a couple of degrees warmer than the rest of a lake’s water will often find you the fish, as baitfish and other organisms are very temperature oriented. In the fall, it’s just the same, as the lakes are cooling down and fish will again seek a warmer pool of water. This temperature not only supplies food sources but also invigorates the fish. Being cold-blooded creatures, fish react to their environmental temperature much more than warm-blooded animals.”

“One suggestion we have is to delay your getting on the water until the sun has had a chance to rise over the lake’s tree canopy along the shoreline. The shoreline water will generally be warmer than the deeper pool in the center of any lakes or ponds. Since the sun rises in the East, its rays will usually hit the water of the northern end of a lake sooner so the water

Fishing Report:   Just got back from fishing and it was another good and fun day. I went up to a brook up the the street from my house they had just stocked it a few days ago so i figured the fishing would be pretty good. At the first hole i lost 2 fish so i moved on to my next hole wherei landed a nice little brook trout about 7" or 8". I caught him on a live worm with a little weight about a foot and half from the hook. I'll be going fishing all weekend and will post another report Sunday sometime hopefully they'll be plenty to report on. Below is the picture of the brook trout check it out and go catch some of your own.

Fishing Report:   So far the fishing had been decent so far this year. Caught some nice fish the past few weeks and it has most deffintely heated up in the past few days. On Monday we landed 3 fish in about a hour at a pond nearby. All 3 were pickerel 16",14",7". The bigger ones were fun and they were the first of the year over 10 inches which is nice to see. On Tuesday the weather was amazing. I caught a bunch of pickerel 2 of which were big again a 17" and 13" along with about 6 or 7 others in the 5"-8". Also we have caught a few bass at another pond and we'll be going trout fishing the next few days looking for some brookies. Hopefully we'll also get a chance to go striper fishing. It still isn't great yet but the schoolies have begun moving in hopefully we'll get some soon.

Fishing Report:   Storm after storm has set back much of the promising fishing that started a couple of weeks ago, but there are still bright spots and the sun’s rays are getting warmer and warmer. One of the problems the storms have caused has been in the rivers and streams, where earlier there were good levels and good conditions, many are now flooded and colored.

One mistake we made last week was in noting the codfish length-limit wrongly. That information was taken from outdated material. The codfish limit has been changed and is currently 24 inches. Many thanks to the readers that picked up on that and our sincere apologies for the miscue!

At Kittery Trading Post’s Fishing Department, Chris Henson is chomping at the bit to get out there and flex his fly rod! “Our region is blessed with big rivers that offer a tremendous opportunity for various kinds of fish that vary from big, brood stock Atlantic salmon to outsized brook, brown and rainbow trout, to incredible smallmouth fishing as well as pike, pickerel and all the warm water species.”

“Early in the spring, as we are right now, probably the most exciting fishery in our region’s big rivers is the Atlantic salmon program in the Merrimack and Pemmigewasett Rivers in New Hampshire. This is a rags to riches program!”

“For years, these beautiful fish that had gone past their prime as breeders in the Atlantic salmon hatcheries had been disposed of in

Fishing Report:   This is the last report of our 2006 season and we’ve had a lot of fun and several new sources of information that add to the value of our reports. This report will focus on the opportunities remaining in the fall fishing. Our 2007 fishing reports will start on Tuesday, January 2nd and will focus mostly on ice fishing.
“With more and more liberal laws and regulations allowing late season fishing, there’s no reason for the avid angler to put away the fishing gear,” noted Chris Henson at Kittery Trading Post’s fishing department.
“In the last several years Maine has allowed an extended season on several warm water species and some special regulations for catch and release trout fishing. One place that always has drawn a lot of fall fishermen is the Rangeley area, where historical runs of landlocked salmon and trout will run into the rivers to spawn. The Kennebago River is kind of the Mecca for a lot of fly fishermen. But that’s not the only river in the Rangeley River where that kind of fishing is available. The Rangeley River, Upper and Middle Dams and the Lower Magalloway all attract trout and salmon. The extended trout and salmon season which starts October first, allows only catch and release fishing while the regular season will end on September 30th.”
“In New Hampshire there’s some spectacular river fishing to be had on the Merrimack and Pemigewasset Rivers where both Atlantic salmon and trout are available. This is a catch and release

Fishing Report:   Last week’s unseasonably cool weather was a blessing and also a bust. Most fish react positively to a stable weather pattern, but a prolonged high-pressure area as we experienced last week often takes a few days for the fish to get over their lethargy. Striped bass are particularly effected by those cool, clear days while on the other hand, there have been days when offshore winds and high pressure have turned on giant bluefin tuna in a big way. Regardless of the effect on the fish, the effect on fishermen of the cool weather was mostly positive, but the winds created problems for both fresh and saltwater fishermen.
Chris Henson at Kittery Trading Post’s fishing department says that the coming few weeks should see a peak in the coastal activity of the small bluefin tuna, often referred to as “footballs.”
“When a combination of ideal sea water temperatures and baitfish come together as it probably will in the next few weeks, there’s a good chance that those football tuna will respond and we’ll get some good fishing offshore.”
“This time of the season in the last few years, the football tuna have moved inshore to the point of often being inside the Isles of Shoals, but normally you’d find most of the fish offshore, on or near some of the ledges that attract baitfish. Stellwagon Banks off of Gloucester, Jeffrey’s Ledge that runs from off of Cape Ann to off Portland, and the more onshore ledges such as Tantas, Boon Island and Scantum are good

Fishing Report:   There are a lot of mixed reports this week as the freshwater bass, especially the largemouths, have gone on a feeding spree while other coldwater fish such as trout and salmon have sought out deep, cooler waters. Saltwater fishermen, especially in the offshore ground fisheries, are being bothered by dogfish, often referred to as “sand sharks”. These fish can make fishing for cod, haddock and other groundfish very difficult.

“Flounder fishing has been really picking up as of late,” reports Chris Henson at Kittery Trading Post’s fishing department. “Both blackbacked (winter flounder) and fluke (summer flounder) are showing up in our local waters. The blackback flounder used to be very numerous in our local waters, but over-fishing and environmental issues knocked down their populations to the point where few fishermen were targeting them. Now that they seem to be making a good comeback, they are again becoming popular.”

“Fluke, even though they are related to the blackbacked flounder, are as different as night and day in their habits and how you catch them. We’ve never been a real fluke destination here in waters north of Boston and Cape Cod, but with the warming of the ocean, we’re seeing more and more fluke. Right now, fluke are being caught in our Piscataqua River and Great Bay watershed, not in great numbers, but enough so it’s time to take notice.”

“Fishing for the blackbacked flounder requires staying right on bottom with

Fishing Report:   As you would expect, fishermen have been out in force for this long weekend. Fishing results have been mixed, but our reporting sources were often too busy to provide the in-depth news we usually receive from them. Good weather certainly has motivated the fishermen to get out there!
Chris Henson at Kittery Trading Post has this tip for fly fishing the long daylight hours of summer. “On those clear bright days when fly fishing the rivers, best luck on surface-feeding fish will come early in the morning and later in the day as the sun gets off the water. These can be great times for dry flies. Try to match the hatch if possible, but when all else fails, some of the best fly fishermen we know will try a big attractor dry fly such as a stimulator or Wulff pattern. These flies will bring up a big trout or salmon once in a while. Why those fish will turn up their noses at your efforts to match-the-hatch and go for one of those big bugs is a mystery, but it does happen enough to make it worth the try.
After the sun hits the water with some direct glare, unless there is a big hatch with surface feeding visible, it’s time to go deep with some nymph patterns. A typical rig to use is a large, often weighted stonefly or wooly bugger on front with a trailer fly—a much smaller nymph pattern about two to three feet behind. The smaller, dropper nymph can be weighted or have a bead head, but this is often not necessary. Mayfly nymph imitations seem to be the most

Fishing Report:   The weatherman has played some dirty tricks on the coastal fishermen, with lots of rain and thunderstorms, while in the Northcountry, they were blessed with a weekend of sun and comfortably warm weather. The fishing news has been good in both areas.

Massachusetts:

What could be the greatest thrill for a Red Sox fan who also is a fanatical fisherman? How about guiding Hall of Famer and former Red Sox legend Wade Boggs out on a striper fishing day! This happened to Pete Santini, who called us from his Fishing FINatics Bait and Tackle this morning so full of excitement that he could have burst!
“You just wouldn’t believe the great luck we had. Fishing was pretty slow here in the harbor, so we went offshore out towards Gloucester. We were fishing with Captain Chuck Distefano on his Skip-a-Dory charter boat. Normally, Chuck doesn’t do a lot of striper fishing, so I was in charge of rigging. We were picking up a few average sized bluefish on small umbrella rigs, but nothing spectacular. Then I rigged a red Santini Tube-n-Worm combo with a four-ounce trolling sinker and let out three colors of leadcore line. We were in about 150 feet of water, actually open water trolling, which we’ve not done much of. Then the unbelievable happened! A 50-inch striped bass grabbed that tube and Wade had the fish of his life to battle with. When Chucky netted that fish and we had it in the boat, it was incredible! Boggs said it was the biggest

Fishing Report:
Maine: “Long Pond’s ice is going out as we speak,” was the good news from Dave Garcia at Naples Bait and Tackle in Naples. “Trickey Pond has lost its ice, as have Sebago, Brandy and the Songo Locks. The brooks are all low and clear and some stocking is to be expected before opening day, especially at the popular Songo Locks.”
“Sebago Lake is coming into its prime. Last fall during netting surveys, the state biologists found some big salmon that were fat and healthy. The lake trout situation in the big lake seems to be under control. Limit catches are not out of the question, but those big days of a couple dozen lakers are probably over.”
“Smelt runs have started in some areas and there should be a good run. Most of the bait dealers should be well stocked by opening day.”
We visited with Carroll Cutting at Jordan’s Store in East Sebago last week. He was at his home recovering from recent surgery. He’s doing great and will be back in the store soon. His take on Sebago Lake is very positive: “We’ve struggled for several years from lack of smelt and too many togue (lake trout), but now we’re seeing a definite turnaround. The smelt are back, big-time. Many fishermen that came in last year reported big schools of smelt on their fish finders and both salmon and togue caught were most often crammed with smelt in their stomachs. This year the salmon stocking will be increased, but of course, we won’t see many results from this until the coming
