Fishing Report: Bang! Streak broken. Broken early and hard. A father's day trip...Father and son, son wanted Dad to hook into a tuna. We had 6 hours to play with....we really only needed one to find our fish. And another 70 minutes to get it to the harpoon.
We started out with only one pogy, a beat-up, used-for-three-hours-yesterday, red-faced, slob. Good winds made flying the kite easy and it wasn't long before things looked good. Not good for the pogy, it was croaking and then a seagull grabbed it, carrying it 30' up in the air!! Damn. It wiggled fast and fell. That's good. Tuna started breaking near us on the port side (the pogy was starboard...) A couple of quick casts into the wind and a few jig drops.... "Look at the pogy!!" It got sucked down by something big and bad. I popped the clip on the kite and set the hook. Fish on! Sean's Dad, Steve, was on for a battle.
Sean and I cleared the kite and deck for a good, long battle. The fish, against full drag on the Okuma Titus Gold (set to about 22 pounds), stripped me down to my backing pretty quickly. 700 yards total 80 pound test is usually plenty, so I wasn't worried, but I still like the "close game". We let the fish beat itself up and it beat us up too! Great battle.
After the fish went vertical, it was tough. Steve was sitting down by this point, but not going to give the rod up. I don't blame him. His fish, his fight! I was able to handline the fish through the circles under the boat,

Fishing Report: How do I put this? It was a slob. Jeff Weber(buckmanJr) mated for me today and did great; I'm thankful to have another set of knowledgeable hands for this trip. Perfect casting conditions and sporadic jumping fish....Craig had a fish slam his yellow/red/clear tunaCandy 20' from the boat... Big fish, close to 73". He soiled himself! Next cast, same thing. Another miss.....Long story short...an hour later he hooked up and it never stopped. Well, it did, but stayed vertical for two hours! We couldn't budge it. We got it to the boat in 90 minutes, but not close enough to stab it. Our estimate, and it was 10' from the boat, was 85", 350+ pounds. An absolute slob of a fish. At one time, it swam straight down at warp speed and slammed the bottom, knocking itself out for a little bit. I didn't know what happened, but this is the best I can figure. We thought something bit it's tail off---it was dead weight while we reeled it up 100' or so, then it came back to. Incredible.
After three hours, my customer finally passed the rod and we were no better at getting it to the boat. In desperation, we almost hooked up a 50-wide with a few tuna hooks and a weight to slide down the line. I didn't want to "quit", thinking it was a bad idea and would snap the braid or leader connection. When it finally snapped the line, after 3 1/2+ hours, I was sick. Incredible fish and what a battle.
We tried backing away from the fish to "tease" it to the

Fishing Report: All I can say is that it was "AWESOME" fishing and probably the best I have seen in a while and that is tough for me to say because bass fishing has been hot.
Jordy and his crew, Mike, Sean and John were up in the Plymouth area to celebrate Sean's 40th birthday, a surprise party the night before. The guys were pumped for this trip. College buddies that have kept in touch over the years, getting out together for some great fishing. We left Brewers Marine around 2pm for our 4 hour bass trip. As we were heading out, the fog had moved back in again so we had about 1/2 mile visibility most of the way across the bay with a stiff east wind that kicked up 2-4' white capped seas. It was nice because the waves were spaced perfectly and in our face so once we got running up around 35mph, we were on top of the waves which made for a fairly smooth and dry ride.
As soon as we hit the spot where we had fished in the morning, things were much different. We were marking piles of fish on the Lowrance fish finder and all of them were in 30-40 ft of water. I told the guys, let's break out the light spinning tackle and try casting for these fish. I rigged 4 spinning rods and the guys started casting. Within minutes, Jordy and Sean hooked up. I love the sound of a spinning reel drag as line is flying off the real. Jordy and Sean put the first two fish in the box. We were not there 5 minutes and the action was hot. Next was John, then Jordy and Sean. Mike, for some reason

Fishing Report: For those of you that follow our reports, you are going to get tired of me starting out with saying this but "WOW", what another exciting day we had on the water today with our bass trip. Today was a planned 6 hour striped bass trip with repeat customers Rob, Ron, George and Steve. We left Brewers Marine around 6:45am today to fish the in-coming and dropping tides. We had a really quick ride across the bay today, the skies were overcast with very little wind which allowed us to run around 30-35mph. We decided to head off to our usual bass spots around the Race Point areas. It was the right decision for the day. Not long after we arrived, there was lots of signs that the fish were there. Marking them on the Lowrance fish finder, seeing the birds and just
clouds of sand eels in the water. The guys decided to start with the wire line so we made a few passes trying to raise some fish. Most of the fish we were seeing were suspended off the bottom as we have seen in days past. Seeing fish like this meant only one thing, break out the light spinning tackle. Within minutes of the first casts, we had fish on. This would set the pace for the day. Ron was the first to hook up, then Rob, Steve and finally George. Fish after fish, we would drift along with the school of bass casting anything from cast master lures, Ronz baits and Yozuri Minnow Jigs. It was another catch and release clinic for a while.
When we started to lose the tide, a buddy of mine gave

Fishing Report: Well we ended our striper season last year with a big WOW and we started it off this year right where we left off, WOW!!!! You could not have asked for better weather on Sunday and with the reports of large bass running around, we went out on the prowl to find them. Our day started by leaving Brewers Marine around 5:30am today. We started out in the usual areas to try and find some mackerel for the live well, all the boats were grouped up tight and we thought for sure we would have had easy pickings for the live well. Our plan was to live line some mack's to try and raise some nice bass. After about an hour of jigging and watching no one else bring any mackerel over the side, we decided to make a run to some of our usual spots in search of fish.
We made a very quick run across the bay at 35mph and were amazed to see that we were the only boat in the area when we arrived. The area looked very promising with lots of bait and birds flying around. As soon as we moved up into the shallower water, the fish finder lit up with some nice marks. If you have not seen how bass mark up on a fish finder, they make a very clear distinct 'upside down V' on your screen. These were definitely nice fish we were seeing on the screen. We decided to put the wire line down to see if we could raise a fish and within 2 pulls of the wire, we had fish on and doubled up as a matter of fact with two keeper bass, 28in and 30in. Watching the fish finder, it looked like the fish were so

Fishing Report: Saturday, May 16, 2009
Foggy today, so that kept the muggers to a distance! It was fun, though. There are a few types of muggers....The first are the ones that see you fishing, so they cruise over, looking to see if the rods are bending. They then set up shop a good distance away, for the first drift. They fish, waiting for you to make a move and re-do the drift. They then "get in line" working the same plane as you have just drifted.
I see another "drive-by" mugger...they cruise by, saving the spot on their GPS, coming back later. The other one is the one....I had a boat yesterday move so close to my bow that I couldn't put my boat in forward when it came time to move!!! We were laughing. It's the old "yep, I see you catching fish and I have no problem with my ego joining the fray." I see the captain around the harbor and know he's a good egg, so I take it as a compliment and can laugh about it. It was funny. With cod, it's ok...with tuna...I'll need some space.
Today's trip had us laughing at the action..it was the most incredible action imagineable. We slammed the haddock at first, then the small cod became too numerous, so we made a move. 30 minutes later, to give credit where credit is due, Curt from Relentless beckoned me to find him and he put us on some amazing action for keeper cod to 30 inches (about 12 pounds). All nice fish and the action held up over shallow water until it was time to go home. Great day on the water and fun

Fishing Report: Finally, we had a break in the rainy, windy and cool weather which allowed us to get out on the water for the first cod/haddock trip of the season on Saturday. This was the kind of trip that you look forward too, especially early in the spring when it is cool with the water temperatures in the low 40's. We left the dock at Brewers Marine in Plymouth around 630am to fish the dropping tide. The winds were light, it was about 54 degrees with an overcast sky on the way out of the harbor. The seas were fairly calm which allowed us to run the Jersey Girl at 30+mph off shore to Stellwagen Bank around the old "BE" Buoy in search of some cod.
When we arrived up on the western edge of the bank, we were greeted with large schools of bait on the bottom. Jigs went over the side and it was not long before we had the first cod over the rails. Most of the cod that came up were smaller fish or "just under" fish in the 19"-23" range. We managed to pick up a few larger market sized cod as we moved from spot to spot across the bank working our way East. After a couple of hours of picking away at the cod, we decided to move down towards the SE corner of the bank where there had been a reports of a good haddock bite.
After a quick run down to just East of the SE corner, we were greeted with a fleet of boats. Small center consoles, large sport-fisherman and the party boats were all stacked up in an area less than an 1/8 of a mile wide. There had to be 50-60 boats in

Fishing Report: Wednesday, April 01, 2009
It was the best day of fishing in my whole life. Period. How else to explain leaving the port late, trying a bunch of places on Stellwagen Bank as "early-season-reconnaisance" and catching nothing there, then getting serious and catching a boatload of haddock in a couple of hours? We had one drift in which we dropped to the bottom and immediately hooked a haddock within 10 seconds. We did this for an hour. There were only three of us. We could have doubled our catch if we added a second hook with bait. The fish were that thick.
It was fun, that's for sure. Of course, because I was fishing, I didn't fillet the fish during the day. Keeping that many fish to fillet all at once wasn't fun. Luckily, all three of us filleted in the parking lot at Green Harbor. (and made a mess out of the boat). We really focused on the light tackle today. I went through all of my new Okuma rods and reels--some light stuff to see if it'll hold up. It did, though we were only catching haddock. I was able to get away with using 6 or 7 oz jigs all day. That was the best--30 pound braid and it was easy to hold the bottom. Still, I'm sore today from reeling in.
Let's hope for good weather this spring; the fish are there. The jigs that I was using were a new design by Stingo-Fish. Last year, I used a lot of diamond jigs with great success. Dave Stingo designed these jigs to be "diamond jigs on steriods". Yes, they'll be used for tuna this

Fishing Report: Guatemala Fishing report December 7th 2008
Christmas is coming - the fish are getting FAT
This Guatemala fishing report is for the week ending
December 7th 2008 and is prepared by The Great Sailfishing Company
operating out of the new Pez Vela Marina.
Things are still "changeable" in Guatemala. One day the sun is out and the seas are calm - the next a quick front can push through and drive up the seas and scatter the bait (along with the billfish that were concentrated on them)........but as we head further into the dry season, the vast majority of days have become perfect fishing days. (Of course many would say that very day is a perfect fishing day !)
There is a great variety of fish to be caught at present - as well as the ubiquitous sailfish, we are catching plenty of tuna and good sized dorado. There are even enough Blue Marlin showing to have the opportunity to cast a fly to one on almost a daily basis.
So it was with Trevor Mennie who made the trip down after waving his wife onto the plane in New York bound for "Blighty". We were only raising high single digits of billfish his first day out on the water with a long wand in hand - but one of those was a Blue Marlin, so some compensation there...........nevertheless, he had come down specifically to catch a billfish on the fly,and we were there to help him.
We set the Reel Diver up for flyfishing, and rigged a good bunch of

Fishing Report: 2008 Season in Review
Thank you, thank you, and more thanks. What a great time we had this year and I think the success was more than just catching fish. We really found our niche this year and built upon the relationships that we started in 2004 when I started Black Rose Fishing Charters. My customers are my greatest assets. If you weren’t good people, this job wouldn’t be any fun. Surrounding ourselves with good people is the best way to enjoy life and it was very evident this year that I’m on the same page with a lot of people. Thank you and keep me smiling! I would be remiss in my duties as a reporter and husband not to give all the credit in the world to my wife, Stacey, for continually encouraging me to pursue this career. She’s been amazing.
I want to mention my many sponsors, supporters, and helpers in this year-end recap. In many instances, I’ll have hyperlinks to their websites and phone numbers to contact them if you have any questions. It’s been a pleasure working with these many people and I look forward to continuing our relationships in 2009 and I have room on my boat to add more! I feel that our relationship is a great, two-way, win-win street.
Okuma Fishing Tackle stepped up to the plate for 2009 and will be supporting me in a greater role with the company. I look forward to testing new equipment with them and giving my 2cents in the design of tackle best suited to the way that we fish in New England. I’ve always been

Fishing Report: What makes a great day of fishing? Seriously, this is important to consider. First, your company. Who are you fishing with? Why are you fishing with them? Second, the ambiance. Are you and the crew ready to have fun out there? Are the conditions condusive to having a good time and enjoying your time on the water. Third; the conditions as in above. Fourth, the fishing itself. Are the fish biting and/or is there hope all day of catching fish?
We nailed it 100% today. I mean, I didn't have a charter, so I asked my Dad if he wanted to join me. Right before my 5-year old went to bed, I asked him if he wanted to go fishing today. We both surprised my Dad at 5:30 this morning by having my son ready to go. The temp was already 50 by the time we hit the pier and there was no wind. We made it to Stellwagen Bank at 30 mph and saw the sunrise over the bank. Birds were everywhere. It smelled great and whales were breaking all over the place.
I gave my Dad a rigged spinning rod, gave my son a jigging rod, and by the time I tied some tuna candy on my line, my Dad was tight with his first tuna. I was nervous about him having a heart attack, to be honest. He fought the fish for 15 minutes and told me to get my fighting belt ready. I was ahead of him. 20 minutes later he sunk the harpoon into the 120# tuna and we were thrilled. About three casts later, I was tight. This time I was using a feather-light jigging rod and a Salina 80 spinning reel. I was very

Fishing Report: Today we had a small window of opportunity to get out and fish the early morning tides before the 40mph+ gales from the SE kicked in. We started our day by leaving Brewer's Marine around 6:15am before the sun could get up over the water. We had a good crew aboard for the day, our goal, to put some tuna in the boat and that is what we ended up doing. Today we were going to target tuna and cod but with the winds forecasted to blow late morning, we made it a tuna day instead. We hit one of my favorite spots where we have seen tuna all season long (giants and small fish) and decided to put the bird bars out for a little bit to see if we could raise some fish while looking for pods on the surface.
About an hour into or troll, we came across some large schools of bait, lots of birds (I MEAN A LOT, ENOUGH TO PICK UP ON RADAR) and then we saw the fish. The weather was perfect, stiff breeze which chopped the water and overcast skies. After pulling through some pods of fish, we pulled in the bars, broke out the spinning gear and now it was time to run these fish down. We made a few moves after watching how the pods of fish were running along with our drift and started to cast. We saw a boat off to our starboard side hook up and within minutes, we had fish all around us. It was frustrating because every cast was perfect and we could not get one to bite. Then it came, Rob had a hit and missed, I had a hit and missed and as we were making the decision to head back because of the
