Fishing Report: During the week of January 27, 2008 I had the pleasure of using the services of First Class Fishing in Punta Cana for three 4-hour charters-- Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Especially nice was the pickup and return to the hotel where I was staying. The driver was always courteous and on time.
When I awoke on Tuesday morning, I knew we would be in for a tough day. The wind was blowing at full force as evidenced by the palm trees bending. Of the five persons on the shared charter, two were seasick before we even cleared the reef. We fished on the Shenika (?) with Capt. Jose but were unable to catch any fish that day due in large part to the tremendous wind and waves. The trolling lines were so bowed from the force of the wind that it was a wonder they did not become fouled. I was encouraged, however, when First Class Fishing's boat Intrepid returned with 3 nice mahi mahi. I knew that Thursday would be better.
On Thursday morning, the wind was blowing, but not as bad as on Tuesday. Again we had a 5 person shared charter on the Shenika. Shortly after clearing the reef, we hooked a yellowfin tuna. After boating it, we continued trolling. Two of the passengers became seasick. Later we hooked a mahi mahi and then mayhem broke out. All the rods had fish on. The mate, Michael, proved very adept at lifting rods over and around other rods and no fish were lost. In addition to bringing the fish into the boat, Michael also was able to rebait and return the

Fishing Report: Captain Rosario,
Thank you for two of the best fishing days in my life! 24 tarpon, on flies, in one day! My brother Frank and I had an absolutely wonderful experience with you. The day before we caught the two dozen tarpon, we caught 10 with you and I simply didn't believe we could do any better. We caught them sight fishing in crystal clear water (4-6 ft.), in deeper water (20-30 ft.) and in the shallows (2-3 ft.). We caught tarpon around boat slips, in the middle of bays, along sandy beaches and along rocky breakers. You certainly know your spots and how (and when) to pick them.
I do have to tell you that when we first went out on that second day and anchored in the middle entrance of a two mile wide bay, first thing in the morning, and you said the tarpon like to come here on Sundays, I thought to myself, well, at least yesterday was good fishing - today, I guess we'll be mostly practicing our casting. Fortunately, I couldn't have been more wrong. You know where the fish are and we certainly got into them there for several hours of steady action. I guess the best story of the day was my catching six tarpon on three casts - I would hook one, it would throw the fly somewhere in the middle of the fight, another tarpon would pick it up and we'd bring it to the boat. I've never seen anything like it. Talk about exciting action! And the fish - "huge" doesn't begin to describe them. I saw one rolling that had a back that looked like a decent sized

Fishing Report: Howdy folks! Captain Till here with the latest report from the San Juan Estuary. Let me tell you, I just finished one of the best weeks in a long time on the water with various customers from the US mainland.
On Friday, September 21, I had former World Record Holder Brian, a fly fishing guide from Colorado, try to hook a tarpon on fly, did he ever! On one of the first casts in the morning, he breaks the leader on a 40 pound tarpon, after which he caught a couple of smaller ones, as the morning progressed, we found a school of large tarpon feeding between two small islands. I changed a fly and on the third cast hooks a decent sized fish, at first we thought the fish to be about 60 pounds, after two hours plus we finally managed to get the tarpon on board, where the fish was estimated at between 90 and 100 pounds, after a few quick photographs, we released the tarpon unharmed into the water.
Brian later said that it was the toughest fish he had ever fought, heck of a comment, coming from a very well traveled fisherman. On Saturday, I had frequent customer and great fisherman, Scott Longueil and his friend Joe, come into town for yet another trip, Scott has been fishing with me for a few years now, we caught a few small tarpon, the I went to buy some Mojarras from the cast netters who catch this fish for sale, and proceeded to hook about a 90 pound tarpon, It took Joe about two hours to get this very tough tarpon to the boat, where a small

Fishing Report: Posted by frank s. on 2007-01-23 08:56:56
On Jan. 3rd I left Sac. at 6:45 am to hook up with my Idaho fishing buddy on the way to Boqueron Puerto Rico (west side of the island). We met up in Washington D.C. and landed in San Juan at 9:30 pm. We had previously decided to stay the first night in San Juan since we didn't know the roads to Boqueron.
After checking in to our hotel close to the airport we went for a walk to the nearby casinos (Nevada style) and ended up at a taco beer joint across the street from our hotel for a late snack. I found it interesting and a little uncomfortable to be searched for firearms in order to eat a snack.
Anyway the next morning at 6:00 am we were on the road to Boqueron for the 2.5 hr drive. On the way we called our guide Francisco "Pochy" Rosario to meet us at the harbor. By 10 am we were ready to step on to the boat. It was very easy because Pochy supplies all the rods and flies so we didn't have to haul all our stuff down there. So we stepped on the boat and he poled us back about 20 yds and we saw our first tarpon of the trip. Within 15 minutes we had jumped the first tarpon. We fished that day until dark (around 6 pm) got off the boat had a beer and an appetizer and headed for our hotel which had been picked by a friend who has lived in Boqueron for 20 yrs. We checked in to the hotel and stayed there one night but the rooms were terribly small and spartan so the rest of the trip we stayed at Boqueron

Fishing Report: Hi everybody this is our deep sea fishing report from 29 of may 2006,early in the morning we were on our sport fishing boat Alta mar with charter captain Alberto Rodriguez Espinal(moreno) and his mate Marcos ventura, about 7:30 am the sun was just rising and we were about 2.3 nmiles offshore right in front of the old light house in front of the punta cana airport, the ocean was flat, and our charter custumers were Mr William Shaftnaker(Bill) and his friend Smith, while they were talking about their last deep sea fishing trip ,suddenly we heard the reel’s sound they could not beleive what was happening,a nice white a marlin bite the fresh bait, they hooked it,after 18 minutes reeling and enjoying the jumping, they took pictures and at the end they release it,they think it was about 60 pounds of weight every body was happy.
Then we kept trolling, and 20 minutes later they had a second bite it was a 18 pounds barracuda.
About 1 hour later they had a third bite it was another white marlin smaller than the other, they enjoyed 15 minutes and release it again .

Fishing Report: The fishing has been very good lately, in the past week, I have released several tarpon in the 10 to 90 pound range, using fly fishing and spinning rods.
In addition several snook were also caught and released, with the biggest one around 10 pounds.
Pictured is Captain Till's youngest son, Jan Michel who is 6 years old, with a 30 to 40 pound tarpon that he caught on 10 pound test a couple of days ago.
There are some openings available for your fishing pleasure, call me at 787-448-6665 and get the latest, " No Bull" information on the fishing conditions in and around San Juan. This season promises to be extremely active due to the fact that there have been no hurricanes affecting the estuary, keeping the native bait specie population flourishing for the fall and winter.
Hope to see you soon in beautiful fun loaded Puerto Rico!

By Mr Larry petersen
Port Ludlow,Washington
Captain Francisco Rosario:
Thanks For one of the best guided fishing trips that I have ever had.Your excellent
knowledge of the tarpons and the local fishing waters made all the difference.we
were blessed with great weather, beautiful scenery and not another fisherman in sight.
It was an exciting event to watch my son battle a large Tarpon for over 3 hours on a 9 weight fly rod, which you estimated to be over 150 pounds before we release it.
Looking forward to booking again with you on my next visit to Puerto Rico.
Sincerely,
Larry Petersen

Shallow-Water Tarpon challenge
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lady anglers have all the luck! While I cast my fanny off for tarpon on the shallow flats of Puerto Rico Pam Sherwood hooked a world record class tarpon on 8 pound test line dangling a live sardine.
I wanted to try fishing for big tarpon as part of a cruise ship vacation. Since we departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico it was the logical place to try and book a light tackle/flyfishing trip for tarpon.
Most of the light tackle and flyfishing guides advertising work out of the harbor area. I wanted to see more of the Puerto Rico coastline than San Juan Harbor where our cruise ship docked. To find a guide outside of the harbor areas I rented a car and made a two hour drive to the west side of the island and started asking around marinas for light tackle and flyfishing guides.
Most of the local charter captains referred us back to San Juan while local anglers jokingly referred us to psychiatrists.
We tracked down light tackle specialist Francisco (Pochy) Rosario in the small town of Boqueron. He pioneered light tackle guiding on the west side of the island. Eight years ago he started chasing tarpon on the local flats after moving over from running deep sea charters. He has an impressive list of avid fly and light tackle anglers from Oregon to England for a guide so hard

Fishing Report: this Saturday morning june 3rd we made a great catch, even failing to release all caught Billfish.
Charter client Brad Gabriel and Family went out for a half day charter, just 4hrs, and Brad got tyred from realing in white Marlins.
sea on lovely 2ft, winds 5-7 knots east south east, skipper Alberto Rodriguez and his mate Franklin Johansi Recio cleared reef on sheduled 8:30AM, just a few minutes after our first quarter moon came out on 8:22AM at 80' in front of today used charter boat Intrepido, a 42ft Post. preparing lines only 2nmls offshore in front of the bavaro passage it took just 20 minutes before the first white marlin hit, hook set like on all hits this morning and Brad got his first fight on, it took him 25 minutes to get the 50lbs white Marlin beside the boat, where they released him unharmed, used reel was a penn international 30lbs. lines wet again it took an other 30 minutes and the second hit came up, different that time for several reasons: Alberto set the hook right away, but this time on a Penn international 20lbs and the white marlin had a 65lbs, showed all he could and fought for more than 90 minutes. sorrily the Marlin had his tongue badly damaged from the hook, so the crew decided he would not survive and gaffed him. now Brad was really tyred, lines wet again, boat position just 5 nmls off the coast that time, so they start a slower trolling inwards to maybe get some dorados for the 2 kids on board, anyways the 4hrs of a half day charter

Fishing Report:
The tarpon continue to come in assisted by the cold fronts coming into Puerto
Rico the past week, they continue to take jumbo and medium Bay Anchovies and Mojarra for bait, mainly using spinning tackle from 8 to 20 pound test lines to do the battling.
Tarpon up to 140 pounds have been released by us and another boat reported a 120 pound tarpon released. Several snook have also been caught and released, most in the 2 to 10 pound range. A large 30 pound snook was caught and released yesterday March 8, 2006.
Offshore the dolphin (Mahi-mahi) continue to have a weak run, with occasional large dolphin being boated . Most of this fishing is done trolling naked ballyhoo and small and medium artificial baits.
The occasional skipjack, blackfin and yellowfin tuna will take the smaller trolled offerings. Several medium yellowfin up to 60 pounds have been boated.
Some billfish activity has been reported, mainly around the full moons, although billfishing in the Puerto Rico waters is primarily a summertime activity .

Puerto Rico Tarpon Report
The fishing has been really good for us these past 2 weeks, tarpon catches up to 80 pounds have been recorded and released by our customers, as well as many smaller tarpon in all sizes.
Yesterday 1-9-06 we had a severe cold front come in and we hooked two good sized backcountry tarpon in the 40 to 60 pound range, getting one in the boat in the 40 pound class, that was on 10 pound test and a 11 year old angler, his hands were sore after the fish, he said.
We also caught the pending state record for Yellowtail snapper, a 5 pound fish on 8 pound test, a 18 to 20 pound Jack Crevalle, a 30 inch Ladyfish, a12 pound Mutton snapper, as well as many barracudas in the 15 to 30 pound range.
The baits of choice continue to be bay anchovies, greenback sardines and the occasional mojarra and mullet.
Offshore a moderate dolphin ( Mahi Mahi) and wahoo run continues, with the dolphin tournaments beginning this weekend for some of the marinas and fishing clubs.
We have been consistently booked, and have some availability for the months of February and March, 2006.
