Fishing Report: Mattern Guide Service on Lake Fairfield
Hello Everybody,
PSALM 46: GOD is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
LAKE FAIRFIELD: Well Lake Fairfield is quite unique because it is a freshwater Power Plant Lake which is stocked with Bass but also Redfish. These hard fighting critters are a welcome bonus while catching Bass on artificials.
Clients enjoyed some great Bass action with about 15 Bass come to the boat and about that many lost that came unbuttoned along with about 8 Redfish on the same baits as the Bass were hitting.
Water temps were in the 70's and the Lake Level has come up considerably. The far ramp is still the safest and anyone can launch there. Bass and reds were caught on plastics rigged carolina rig style. Creature baits in watermelons was the ticket. Reds and Bass were located near points and shallow sand bars early then off the breaklines in about 12 feet later in the day.
We also caught some on shrimp fished off bottom near the intake. Most of the redfish were small this week and locals said they were hittting all night long on shrimp catching up to 30 a night. The Full moon phase surely had to make a difference in the timing of the bite. I had Chip Berry and son ,Stokely with me from Tyler and we had a great time and also saw the many Bald Eagles and Wildlife that fly around and live in this State Park.
If you would like some of this action

Lake Fork Trophy Bass
Fishing Report 11-2-2009
November is an awesome month here at Lake Fork for catching trophy bass! As the water cools off and the bass begin their annual feeding frenzy there is a huge window of opportunity for many anglers to catch numbers of quality fish, not to mention the bass of a lifetime. The fish are gorging themselves on everything that crosses their path both in shallow and deep water. This leaves them vulnerable to the fisherman who fore go the duck blind and deer stand in pursuit of these big bass.
The water conditions at Lake Fork have been the biggest factor for some time here lately. With every week bringing some degree of precipitation over the past month, the lake conditions have been less than ideal. The continuous inflow of water has kept a lot of areas on the lake stained and the gates open at the dam periodically. If you are familiar with these conditions then you know that catching fish on Lake Fork in stained or fluctuating water levels can be a challenge. Do not let this deter you from your favorite fall honey hole though. The fish are still going to continue their annual activity regardless of the water conditions. Here are a few patterns that will hopefully help you catch the fish of your dreams right now!
Most everyday we have been starting our day off shallow with some top water action. Great baits to throw right now are a Berkley Frenzy Popper, yellow magic,

Fishing Report: Mattern Guide Service on Lake Palestine & Sam Rayburn & Lake Fairfield
Hello Everybody,
MARK 11: Verse 25: And when you stand praying, forgive, if you have ought against any: that your FATHER also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
SAM RAYBURN: Wow we have been getting flooded. Jasper had almost 4 inches just 2 days ago.Lake level is at 161.11. I was on the Lake yesterday and watched the Lake rising as I was fishing. Water is off color in the creeks and coves. The big run off from that 4 inch rain can be easily noticed. Patterns have changed for me in this flooded circumstances.
We used a 1/2 oz Nichols rattle shad in the Lake Fork red shattered glass pattern. We caught 16 Bass to
4 lbs. 10 were keepers and 6 short fish. Bass were holding in the flooded grass and hydrilla. Water temps was 65 degrees.
Now Jacksonhill Marina is carrying Nichols baits. The Rattle shad mentioned is in stock there and it is a deadly weapon on Bass at Rayburn durring the early through spring time when Bass are hitting the traps. Go by and see Terry the owner and tell him Don sent ya. Or call David Nichols at 903-589-8100. I am still proving alot of His baits and will let ya'll know which ones the Rayburn Bass like. His Jigs and spinnerbaits are outstanding.
Lets book a trip. You can call me at 903-478-2633 or e-mail me at donmat@windstream.net. Good fishing and may God bless in

Fishing Report: Mattern Guide Service on Lake Palestine & Sam Rayburn & Lake Fairfield
Hello Everybody,
JOHN 4: Verses 23 & 24; But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship HIM.
GOD is a Spirit' and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
SAM RAYBURN: Current Lake Level is 159.77 , Full pool is 164.Water temps in the low 70's to high 60's. Clients enjoyed some great action at Big Sam catching Bass up to about 6 lbs. The spinnerbait bite was on using Nichols White/Chartruse double willow leaf in the stained glass blade pattern. Bass were set up on the Grass edges in 2- 8 feet. Carolina rigs worked well also rigged for the shallower rigging near the grass with Zoom Big Critter Craws in Watermelon colors.
LAKE PALESTINE: Current Lake level is 346.51 Full pool is 345. The Neches River in the North is flowing from all the run off and is terribly muddy. Even Kickapoo Creek was running under the 315 bridge. It was not as Muddy but messed up real good. I think it will take about another week to clear up and get stable for a descent Bass Bite.
Mid-Lake to Dam in good shape right now. Bass are following the migration of the schools of shad into the coves ,pockets, and creeks to fatten up for the winter.
Clients enjoyed Bass up to 9 lbs. in the last few weeks with alot of

Fishing Report: Mattern Guide Service on Lake Palestine & Sam Rayburn & Lake Fairfield
Hello Everybody,
PSALM 104: VERSES 1&2; Bless the LORD, O my soul, O LORD my God, Thou art very great, thou art clothed with hounor and majesty. Who coverest thyself with LIGHT as with a garment; who stretchest out the heavens like a garment.
LAKE FAIRFIELD: Well as alot of you know in October I start guiding on Lake Fairfield thru February along with Lake Palestine and Sam Rayburn.
Lake Fairfield is a power plant lake having turbines that intake the lakes water as a cooling for the engines then discharge it out of the discharge channel. It warms to a 84 degree temperature as it enters the Main Lake. This keeps the Lake at a comfortable 63 degree lake most of winter.
But what is unusual about Lake Fairfield is it is stocked with REDFISH. Some are small like 16-18 inches but some are up to 40 lbers. Mostly the Big uns run about 8-10 lbs. The locals take nets and cast for live bait such as shad and perch and then park and bottom fish like you would for catfish.
This week the Reds are really on with just about everybody getting their limits. We had about 18 reds up to 10 lbs. on a trip this week and that was entirely on artificials.
The Bass are mostly feeding at night right now until the first low 30's cold snap then they will start hitting the shallows. The Lake is lower than I have ever seen it. The 2nd boat

Fishing Report: Lake Fork Trophy Bass Fishing Report
Submitted October 2, 2009
By Guide James Caldemeyer
Well Folks, October is finally here and boy what a great month it is for bass fishing on world famous Lake Fork! I highly anticipate this month each year and the tremendous fishing that it offers. Whether you are just coming out to fish for a day or two with family & friends or are planning to fish the 4th Annual Berkley Big Bass Tournament the 17th-18th, here are some pointers that may help you catch that winning fish or a fish of a lifetime.
As you may or may not know, last month was a very wet month here so we have plenty of water in the lake for fall fishing. Lake levels have been within a foot or so of full pool for some time. This can provide some very good fishing for both shallow and deep water angling once the lake has completely turned over and the water has cooled off enough to ignite the heavy fall feeding activity. I will be covering a variety of patterns, baits, and presentations in this report to cover both leisure fisherman and tournament anglers alike.
First off, the shallow top water bite is the way to start off the day. Most everyday there is top water bite to be found somewhere on the lake and what better way to start off the morning or finish the day than with big bass exploding on the surface. I like to target the main lake and secondary points or the backs of the major creeks in 2-8 feet of

Fishing Report: Mattern Guide Service on Sam Rayburn & Palestine
Hello Everybody,
ACTS 3: Verses 6&7: Then Peter said, Silver and Gold have I none but such as I have I give unto thee. In the name of JESUS Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And He took him by the right hand, and lifted him up; and immediately his feet and ankle bones recieved strength.
SAM RAYBURN; Well the weather has the Bass doing one thing on one day and another on the next. The water temps have been running from the 70's to the 80;'s depending on the heat of one day to the chill of the next. The cloudy days have brought a tremendous topwater bite around the shallow grass on yellow magics and poppers. The Buzzbait produced the Biggest Bass in the last Bass n Bucks Championship. The Sun gets hot and the topwater is off except in early morning hours. The Black and Blue Nichols 1/2 ounce Jig tipped with a Gene Larew craw has been catching good with clients worked along the edges of 6-10 foot Hydrilla. The Carolina rig has been working well also with a watermelon seed Zoom Big critter craw worked along Points and Grass in 6-12 feet.
LAKE PALESTINE: Water temps have been running in the 70's to 80's depending on the cold fronts and the heat of the next day. The Bigger Bass were scarce this week with alot of smaller bass feeding on the schools of shad moving into the back of the coves. 4 lbs. was the biggest this week but clients enjoyed alot of

Fishing Report: The bass have been biting better up shallow in the last few days with all this rain, but look for the deep bite to turn on here very soon.
For the shallow water bite look for fish to be holding around shallow grass, pads, and stick ups, in 2 to 8 feet of water on the main lake and in the first half of the major creeks. We have had a good top water bite for about the first hour of the morning. The best Top Water bait for me has been a Shad colored Pop R, and an 1/8oz Buzz bait. This bait may be little but the bass here on Lake Fork will eat it up. Also in the last two days we have had a good Spinner bait bite with this weather change. The Spinner bait that I like to throw this time of year is a 1/4oz Colorado Willow, with Nickel & Gold blades and a Chartreuse & White skirt. I have been throwing the Spinner bait in the same cover as the Top Water baits, and this pattern has held up till about mid morning.
Once this bite slows down I am hitting the main lake and secondary points located in 12-20 feet of water with a Carolina Rig. Best bait on the Carolina Rig for me has been a Watermelon Seed Brush Hog and Watermelon Seed Speed Craw. I am using a 1 ounce weight with a 4 foot leader along with a 3/0 hook. The bites have been very subtle, the bass are just holding the bait and this makes it hard to detect a bite. That’s why I tell my clients if it feels funny set the hook. Stay on points that have grass around the area that you are fishing. This is where we

Fishing Report: Mattern Guide Service on Sam Rayburn & Palestine
Hello Everybody,
Psalm 40; Verses 1-2; I waited patiently for the Lord and He inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
SAM RAYBURN: Well fishing has been great lately. The slightly cooler temps has a great early morning bite on topwaters from poppers to frogs worked over points and edges of grass. Water temps have been in the 80's. The lake level is at 160.20 about 4 feet low.
Texas rigs worms in redbugs and plums have been doing well also. Bass up to about 6 lbs. has been the norm with about 25 bass days. The Carolina rig has been working on the breaks in 12-22 feet.
LAKE PALESTINE: The Lake level is about 3 feet low at about 343.79. Water is running in the 80's for water temps. Bass have been biting great lately with the cooler temps. I say cooler, 80's compared to 100's is alot cooler for me. Bass up to 6 lbs. have been caught and brought to my boat this week bt clients enjoying a variety of patterns. The frogs have been fun worked in and around grass and cover, the spinnerbait in white chartruse Nichols caught Bass up to 5 lbs. also. Texas rigged creature baits in watermelons caught also worked around wood and grass.

Fishing Report: Lake Fork Trophy Bass Report
Submitted August 27, 2009
By Guide James Caldemeyer
August has been an up and down month for bass fishing on Lake Fork this year. This is fairly common for this time of year but combined with the lake levels being higher than usual it has kept anglers, including myself, in suspense from day to day as to how well the fish will bite. On my recent trips over the past 2-3 weeks we have managed to catch 10-12 a day and on others 25-30. The quality of the fish we have been catching has been just as unpredictable as well. You can just as easily catch a big bass in the same areas we are catching small to medium slot fish. Not to be discouraged though! Better quality bass and more predictable fish activity is fast approaching. As we head into September and the fish start moving into their early fall patterns, the fishing and the lake will change dramatically.
Lake Fork is still in great shape and sitting at 402.71 about 3” low. There are plenty of areas to find great grass especially with the lake being higher for this year and the water clarity in most spots is pretty clear. There are some areas that have been getting stained by wind but I always try to move to the clearest water I can find from this time of the year through fall. Pay close attention to the water clarity as September progresses. The lake will be turning

Hello Everybody,
MARK 8: VERSE 35; For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the Gospel's, the same shall save it.
Well I have been gone almost a month to Uraguay preaching the Gospel of Jesus. What great fishing for Jesus. Many recieved Jesus and Hundreds recieved the Baptizm of the Holy Spirit.
SAM RAYBURN ; 2 ways to go deep or to the Grass both will produce. Bass were brought in this week up to 10 lbs. The bigger Bass were caught on Carolina rigs worked in 20 - 30 feet. Old road beds, Humps, Points, and Channel swings. Good baits are Baby Brush hogs in watermelons and also yum dinger type baits in the same as well as flukes and grubs.
Wacky rigs along the edges of grass beds outside and inside edges have produced this week. Good colors were the wildberries color from Phantom Tackle in their version of the stick worm called the Stinko.
Also Frogs like the Ribbit continue to produce in thick vegetation, Good colors have been Green Pumpkin Back with Pearl Belly and the color called Blue Shad.
Water temps have been in the high 80's and low 90's.

Fishing Report: Lake Fork Trophy Bass Report
Submitted July 15, 2009
By Guide James Caldemeyer
July has been a hot one so far with temperatures reaching 100+ on a regular basis. This summer heat hasn’t stopped the bass from biting though. Whether its deep fishing during the day, or chasing those night time lunkers, now is still a great time to come fishing at Lake Fork. Most days have been good for numbers of quality fish during the day with an occasional big fish while the night bite is more reliable to catch a really big fish under the cooler temperatures and a full moon.
The lake is still in great shape with water levels at 402.76 which is only about 3-4 inches from full pool. Considering the heat we have been having, there is still an abundance of water. The clarity is fairly clear throughout the lake with 3 feet visibility. The water temperatures have been very warm due to the heat with water on the main lake ranging from 86 degrees in the mornings to 94 during the peak of the day. As the thermocline sets up out deep, these fish can be found in some real deep water this time of year through August.
I have been fishing mostly day trips lately and fished one night trip with great success on the 11th. The morning bite has been fairly slow lately with only a few fish being caught out of my boat but about 11 a.m. they have been turning on and biting throughout the heat of the day. Crazy but true! That’s
