Fishing Report: Redfish have come full circle over the past 15 years in the Mosquito Lagoon. The imposed net ban has the fishery booming. The days of getting out on the salt flats looking for a ghost of a fish are gone. It is not uncommon to have days where you find 300 to 400 fish in large schools in 1 foot of water.
In recent years Fly Fishing is one of the main ways to fish for them on the flats. On some days; due to its stealth approach, it\'s the only way to go. When the fish get spooky and conditions are though it is the best way to go.
On a recent trip I found that wading can be a truly great way to take a Red on the Fly. First there is a degree to invisible approach that is unmatched to poling up to them in a boat.
You can get up to them as close as 20 feet before you scare them. Not to mention the fact that it is truly amazing to walk up to a tailing Red and put the Fly right in his face, then slowly strip it away.
With the right Fly and conditions you can score big. It is possible to have a fish as big as 30 plus inches take a Fly. I have found that all Shrimp and Crab patterns work the best. Borski's slider or a Del's Merkin work great. Stay with browns, tans and white.
The world famous Mosquito Lagoon is located in Titusville Florida on the Central East coast. Right next to the Kennedy Space center on the Canaveral National Seashore. The area is federally protected with no homes or condos. It is one of the few areas in Florida that has un spoiled beaches and waters.
