SALTWATER FISHING TRENDS :
SOUTH CAROLIN FISHING PIERS:
Cherry Grove Pier: Open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week, 7 am to 2
am on Friday and Saturday. During recent Kingfishing tournament 7 nice
king mackerel were caught. Blues and Spanish were hitting pretty good,
blues on gold hooks and Gotcha plugs. A few flounder were caught -one
2-pounder - using mud minnows with egg slip sinker and trailing leader.
Some sheepshead were caught on sand fleas and barnacles. To rig
barnacles, wrap several on a hook using black thread.
Apache Pier (Myrtle Beach): Bait Shop open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days
a week.
One 3 pound, 3 ounce pompano was caught June 14. Also caught recently
were a 9 pound 12-ounce flounder with many in the 15 to 17-inch range.
A 34-pound 8-ounce cobia caught recently. Some good-sized bluefish - 3/4
to 12 pound range - were caught using cut shrimp, jigs, and gold-silver
mackerel trees. Black drum are hitting sand fleas and fiddler crabs,
also sheepshead. For flounder use egg slip sinker with mud minnows and
live shrimp.
Springmaid Pier: Pier is open 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week,
year-round. Tackle shop open 6 a.m. to 11 pm. Slow, with some blues,
whiting, and Spanish mackerel reported. For whiting and bluefish use
shrimp and cut mullet. . For Spanish mackerel use jigged gold hooks.
For bluefish try cut mullet, finger mullet and jigging gold hooks.
Myrtle Beach State Park Pier: Myrtle Beach State Park Pier: Open 6 a.m.
to 9:30 p.m., 7 days a week. Whiting, Spanish mackerel, nice sized
blues. An occasional flounder and a few spotted trout have been
reported. Use cut shrimp, mullet and squid. Spanish mackerel being
caught on jigged gold hooks and Gotcha plugs.
Surfside Pier: Open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. Whiting,
spots, black drum, Spanish, pompano were reported caught on cut shrimp.
A few flounder have been taken on mud minnows. For Spanish mackerel use
gold hook rigs.
The Pier at Garden City: Open 24 hours a day for fishing. Spanish
mackerel a few blues - some large - and pompano were reported caught.
For Spanish use gold hook rigs. For blues use on Gotcha plugs. Cut
shrimp is best for whiting.
Winyah Bay Fishing and Observation Pier (Georgetown): Open 6 a.m. to
midnight, seven days a week, with free parking and fishing. Visitors
also enjoy great bird watching. A Freshwater Fishing License is required
due to brackish water. Coming soon, a second fishing pier on Winyah Bay.
Activity slow but improving.
Folly Beach Pier: Open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. through October. Black drum
whiting, spadefish and ladyfish have been taken on cut shrimp
Hunting Island State Park Fishing Pier: Pier is open 24 hours a day. The
Nature Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 7 days a week. Small sharks and
whiting have been caught on cut shrimp and cut bait. Use mud minnows for
the flounder.
SOUTH CAROLINA INSHORE FISHING(State Waters):
Cherry Grove: Flounder have been reported to be taking mud minnows in
the inlet.
Murrells Inlet:
Flounder were reported hitting mud minnows and cut shrimp.
Charleston Area: Red drum activity is picking up. Sheepshead and black
sea bass are very good at the jetties and other structures. Use fiddlers
and live shrimp. Flounder can be found in shallow inlets using mud
minnows and grubs. Summer Trout caught on live shrimp.
Edisto Area: Some flounder are being caught on big mud minnows. For use
red drum shrimp and cut bait.
Beaufort Area: Red drum are biting live mud minnows or shrimp, as well
as artificial grubs. Sheepshead will take fiddlers around rocks and
structures. Flounder mud minnows, a few summer trout have been caught
using live shrimp and artificials. For cobia in the Broad River try
squid and eels.
SOUTH CAROLINA OFFSHORE FISHING (Federal Waters):
Cherry Grove: Boats from Calabash and Little River report Atlantic
Bonita are just offshore from 2 to 10 miles out. Use No. 1 Clark spoons.
Bottom fishing over reefs and live bottoms is still producing black sea
bass as well as silver snapper. Use squid or cut bait. Good catches of
black drum and speckled trout around Little River.
Murrells Inlet: Tuna, wahoo and king mackerel were reported biting in
the Gulf Stream. Snapper, grouper and a few amberjack are good. Catches
of black sea bass are still good. Fish over live bottoms and structures.
Use squid and cigar minnows. Some wahoo and blackfin tuna were caught
past the 300-foot line in the Gulf Stream. Good catches of Yellowfin
tuna trolling with ballyhoo. Some king mackerel caught offshore.
Charleston Area: Georgetown Hole and the Southwest Banks are yielding
nice wahoo, dolphin, blackfin.. Troll with ballyhoo. Black sea bass are
still good over reefs and live bottoms. Snapper and grouper are good off
ledges around 180 feet deep. Use cut bait or squid. Also good offshore
catches of blue marlin, dolphin, wahoo, sailfish and white marlin.
Edisto River/St. Helena Sound: Dolphin and bill fish action has slowed
down. An occasional, wahoo, and sailfish have been caught 200 feet down
with blue and whites with ballyhoo. Also try red and blacks with
ballyoo for wahoo on the ledge.
Beaufort Area: For cobia in the Broad River use eels, squid, or Sabiki
rigs with herring. Wahoo, dolphin and blackfin tuna have been caught
near the Gulf Stream at the thermal break, trolling with ballyhoo and
artificial lures. For sheepshead and whiting off wrecks use fiddler
crabs and shrimp. Also reported are spadefish, Spanish mackerel, king
mackerel and bluefish around the wrecks.
