Fishing Report: June 12th, 2005
Capt Glenn reporting for this week. Fishing has been really good despite the rain this week. Things are starting to get back to normal patterns.
Tarpon are still hitting good on the outside off the beaches or inside in the Sound. Methods remain the same for these fish. Drifting live threadfin herring or live dollar crabs behind the boat at about 50 to 75 yards. I like to use 30lb gear with a line capacity of at least 300 yards in case the big boy of over 200lbs hits. The tarpon are magnificent leapers and will take on a drag screaming run. The month of June is one of the best months for the tarpon. If you
are thinking of doing a trip now is prime time.
Snook are hitting with a vengance. As the rains have pushed a lot of the snook to the outside passes and beaches to start their spawning cycle. Drifting thru the passes with live greenback minnows is the ticket to some fast action. I have also been getting some nice catches near some of the downed trees in the Sound. With snook of up to 35" being caught last week. Snook will stay in this pattern for most of the summer.
Redfish are where you find them. I have been getting good reds near the same structure as the snook. Look for the reds near the bushes on the flood tide. On the out going tide look for the reds in the many potholes in the grassflats. The reds have been taking small greenbacks and small pinfish floated on a popping cork.
Seatrout fishing remains excellent. The big females are in to spawn and are big and hungry. Most of my trips are resulting in fish over 20" with some of the fish going over 24". Floating greenbacks over the grassflats in 2 to 3ft of water is the ticket for these fish. Limits of 4 fish per person have been easy to come by. On one trip last week we got a two man limit in 30 minutes. Cloudy and rainy weather has sparked a feed for seatrout.
Sharks are everywhere. On a trip last week while fishing for trout a large shark of unknown species grabbed one of the baits and spooled the reel. Fishing for sharks remains excellent.
Well that will do it for this week. Thank you Capt Glenn.
