Fishing Report: July 1, 2005
INDIAN RIVER COUNTY - Inshore the trout bite has been steady early in the morning when using a live shrimp or a live pigfish which has been the top bait to use. There are plenty of tarpon around the Moorings Flats but getting them to eat is another thing. Look for snapper and sheepshead along the channel edges.
Offshore the fishing has been a little slow for most but some anglers are finding some nice size dolphin in 120 to 160 feet of water out of the Sebastian Inlet. The kings have been scattered along the beaches. I did get reports of good bottom fishing in 80 to 100 feet of water to the south of the Sebastian Inlet.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY - The trout bite has been good in 3 to 5 feet of water for anglers using live pigfish. Most of the fish reported this week were 5 pounds and under. There has been plenty of snapper around the bridges and along the channel edges. Most of the fish were caught on live shrimp and were in the 1 to 2 pound range. The tarpon have been around the Big Mud Creek area and are being very picky about what they will eat. The catch and release snook action has been red hot up in Taylor Creek early in the morning. There were a few flounder reported at the South Jetty.
The best offshore reports were coming form the bottom fishermen with good catches of snapper, grouper and sea bass. They were fishing the Northeast Grounds. The dolphin have been scattered from 60 to 180 feet of water. I did get a few reports of cobia in that same area. Also, some tarpon are showing up along the beaches along with some big kings.
MARTIN COUNTY - Inshore the clean water is hard to find but if you do you will find the trout and redfish. Still a good number of catch and release snook being reported at Middle Cove. The snapper, black drum and croakers are around the local bridges and feeding on live shrimp.
Offshore is just like the rest of the Treasure Coast -- the bottom fishing has been producing good catches of snapper, grouper and sea bass. Try along the Six and Eight Mile Reefs. The dolphin have been scattered around 100 to 140 feet of water. There have been quite a few sailfish jumping also.
OKEECHOBEE COUNTY - Look for the bream around the banks of the river and canals. They should still be bedding. The bass fishing is still good at places like Kings Bar and the Monkey Box.
BRAGGING BOARD - Sandy Castrignano of north Hutchinson Island caught 2 bull dolphin while fishing aboard the Scuba Doc. The fish weighed 29 and 40 pounds. They were using naked ballyhoo and fishing in 90 feet of water out of the Ft. Pierce Inlet. They also had two 8 pounders.
