Fishing Report: SCRATCHY FISHING GIVES US POSSIBLY WORST WEEK OF SEASON- AIRFARES DROP - PHOTO

WINDS COME UP AND DO A NUMBER ON THE FISHING
Ever go to the doctor for a routine check up thinking it's no big deal. You feel great. Nothing wrong. You go right in. You'll chit chat. BS a little with your doc. Get a lollypop on the way out and go on your way? Insetad, to your surprise, the doc pulls out the rubber gloves; you have to drop trou and walk down the hall in one of those little gowns with your backside showing and he does alot more to you than make you turn your head left and cough? Whole day ruined? Well...you know I like to tell ya the straight on how the fishing is. That's how I felt a good part of the week. That's what it was like this week and I guess "disappointed," can't begin to describe how I feel for some of the amigos that were here. Everyone fished HARD, but it was not real great. All the conditions had been good. The fishing had been getting better. Even the waters were finally warm. Bait was good. It was a dark moon (By the way...our BEST fishing this year has been on a FULL moon for anyone checking!).
It's sure was not great fishing here this past week. There were some hightlights, but for the most part it was scratchy fishing brought on by winds that came up and messed up the bait, the bite, the currents and alot of otherwise good fishing that seemed like it was just about to take off. There had been a tropical storm off S. Baja earlier in the week that petered out, but it left it's mark on us. The wahoo bite dropped. The dorado and marlin got lockjaw. They were there to be seen, but gave a cold shoulder to much of the offerings. Even the reliable bonito and pargo went to ground. Toughest week so far of the season.
That being said...here's some good things...
1. There's still ALOT of fish around...dorado...wahoo...tons of marlin. They just are very scattered and not necessarily biting.
2. There's an incredible PARGO bite on the La Paz side that has really saved our skins several days
3. The bait seems to have come back for Las Arenas. Got scary there for awhile. Tough to fish with no live bait
4. Completely pleasant weather right now
5. If you have to kill one of the marlin, there's alot of small ones mixed with the big ones and the meat is incredible for cooking
6. There's BIG marlin around as well...blues in the 200-600 pound range eating the dorado so don't be surprised if you're fishing with 30 pound outfits for dorado then get picked up by something as large as the boat
7. I thought the wahoo were finally gone, but they are still lurking
NOTE ON AIRFARES
Just a quick head-up....seems airfares are around $260 or so right now for alot of upcoming dates. That's a great fare with Aero California out of Los Angeles to La Paz round trip. As for upcoming dates...I'm really almost closed out for Labor Day weekend as well as the last days of September and beginning of October, but there's still a few spots around those times. If you're even considering August, September and October, you should book it ASAP.
PHOTO GALLERY FOR THE WEEK
Despite some tough fishing, there were still some really good highlights from this week and last week:

Mike Butler here holding a fat Jack Crevalle, also called a "Toro" (Bull) by Mexicans because of their tough fighting disposition. Terrible meat, but darned great fighter. One of the best on light tackle.

Our very own web maestro Aaaron Horton of West Los Angeles had a real nice day. He got a bit barred pargo; this tasty amberjack; some yellow snapper and I"m sure he's still wondering how he lost that huge roostefish that was big enough to inhale an 18 inche ladyfish bait.

This has been a banner year for marlin and you will be hard pressed to find a shot like this one taken by Chuck Atkins of San Bernardino of a nice billfish doing "the walk!"

Victor Aguilar of Riverside fought this roosterfish on light tackle for over an hour. Unusual catch because most roosters are caught in shallow water near the beach. This was hooked in blue water offshore. The fish was released. Good job!

PHOTO of the WEEK

Patrick Herreria of Oxnard works at Sport Chalet and told his co-workers that on his first trip to La Paz he was going to have a banner trip. He got a bit under-the-weather on the first day, and was not able to leave the hotel, but re-bounded on his second day to nail this cherry wahoo off the southern side of Cerralvo Island.
That's my story!
