Fishing Report: Fishing In North Carolina
Northeastern North Carolina Fishing Region
Charterboats: Offshore catches have yielded limits of yellowfin tuna & dolphin, with moderate catches of wahoo, and improving billfish catches. Midrange catches include black sea bass, tripletail, king mackeral,and large cobia. Inshore charters are catching endless amounts of bluefish along with flounder, croaker, and Spanish mackerel.
Headboats: A mixed bag of species including flounder, bluefish, pigfish, croaker, seatrout, dogfish sharks, spadefish, and Spanish mackerel have been caught.
Private Boats: Catches similar to charter boats in above described waters.
Piers: Lots of bluefish, spot, and kingfish with lesser amounts of flounder and seatrout.
Shore: Catches similar to piers. Surf fishing for red drum has improved from Avon southward.
General Overview: Most improved fishing is the keeper size flounder ratio and offshore billfish fishing.
Central Region Report
Headboats: Another week of good fishing. The all-day boats are catching a ton of white grunts, banks sea bass, porgies and some nice grouper. The half-day boats are bringing in spottail pinfish, sea bass and shark.
CharterBoats: Boats are bringing in dolphin and wahoo. The dolphin are primarily butter beans with a rare gaffer mixed in. Many white marlin and sailfish were caught and released. Kings are also out there.
Private Boats: Kings are all over the Trawler Buoy and Northwest places. Dolphin are appearing on Jerry's Reef, 13 Buoy and the Big Rock. The dolphin are primarily shingles. There are redfish in the Haystacks of the Newport River and flounder in North River.
Piers/Shore: Anglers were catching coolers of spots all around 8 inches long and small kingfish on one of the piers. Also a 2 pound pompano and some 14 inch Spanish came in Sunday morning. Beach bank fishing is very poor, only pinfish reported.
Southern Region Report
Headboats: Another good week for gulf stream trips. There were some very nice grouper, red snapper, hogfish, and other assorted bottom fish caught, as well as some dolphin, king mackerel, and amberjacks.
CharterBoats: Stream fishing was slow this week, some dolphin and a few billfish releases. Full/day charters continue to do well. Grouper, king mackerel, dolphin, and an assortment of bottom fish. Inshore charters are catching drum, flounder, and some speckled trout.
Private Boats: Not much has changed. King mackerel fishing along area beaches has been good over the last several weeks now. Carolina Beach Inlet has been real good and topsail inlet has produced some nice fish as well. Kings are also biting offshore in the ten to twenty mile range, along with some dolphin, and a few sailfish. Inshore, flounder fishing is decent. There are some nice fish being caught in the river and around Southport. The inshore reefs are producing some fish, but nothing red hot. There are some nice speckled trout being caught in the lower part of the river and behind Bald Head Island.
Piers: They are still doing decent on the trout off of Oak Island piers in the morning on live shrimp. King mackerel fishing was good last week on some of the piers. On one of the piers anglers caught kings pretty much all week, with one weighting over 40 and another over 30. There also have been several tarpon landed off of area piers. Flounder fishing has been good lately on most piers, with most fish being keepers. Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, and a few sea mullets were reported as well.
Shore: Fishing is slow for the most part. There are some drum being caught where conditions are favorable.
