Fishing Report: MASSACHUSETTS Fishing
Kay Moulton at Surfland on Plum Island reports the
largest striper of the year came out of the Merrimack. "It weighed 41
pounds and was 53 inches long. The fish was caught on a live pogy. There
are small pods of pogies in the river so the fishermen are snagging them
and using them live. On the outgoing tide down near the jetties there's
been big schools of tiny stripers--about a foot long. Bluefish have
moved offshore and are active only early in the morning. Flounder guys
are doing well from boats but not from shore."
"We've got a few fluke here in the rivers," reports Pete Santini at
Fishing FINatics in Everett. "Chincoteaugue Rigs baited with strips of
squid, cut bait or live shiners are working pretty well. The fish are up
to 23 inches long. The big stripers have moved out along the shoreline
and around Egg Rock and Nahant. The action on orange, red or honey
mustard Santini Tube-n-Worm rigs has been hot, with plenty of 40-inch
plus fish in the mix. Fish 4 to 6 colors of leadcore."
"Schoolie tuna have been off the BF and the H Buoy and are being
taken on birds and feathers (birds are big attracting lure with no
hooks, feathers are a weighted jig type lure with feathers instead of
bucktail) or squid bars. Cod and haddock are still hitting at the east
end of Stellwagon. Flounder are scattered, but you can pick away at them
around Green Island. The bluefish are also scattered, with the area
around the B Buoy being the best lately," he ended.
