Fishing Report: Chesapeake Bay Fishing
July offered up some decent fishing for Chesapeake Bay anglers. Although the action got started late this year more so than in previous years the big Cobia showed and were available in the Bay between the 4rth Island and the High Rise Bridge. Several 50 plus pound fish hit the docks. The Light Tower yielded consistent action as did some near shore wrecks for some great Spade fishing. In offshore action, BFT (Blue Fin Tuna) made an early July showing. Scattered in with the BFT were decent numbers of Dolphin, Wahoo, and a few White Marlin towards the latter part of the month. Capt Duane Martin on the Dare Ya scored with two nice White Marlin just last week. Yellowfin Tuna have also come on strong since the middle of the month.
Bottom fishing was very spotty. Good catches one day followed by slow action the next - typical summertime bottom fishing. Most of the action came in shallow depths in about 40' of water or less especially near the first Island for flounder. With the HEAT WAVE and how can you call it anything but, the action has moved into deeper water. Night time fishing around the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel for gray trout was almost non-existent but there were a few nice trout up to 6 or 7 pounds boated.
Chesapeake Bay fishing for croaker has been good with some large croaker being caught. Just last week there were croaker in the 2 lb to 2 3/4 lb range being caught around the man made islands of the CBBT. Spot on the other hand have been few, small, and far in between although this should change in August and some large spot should make a showing in Rudee, Little Creek, and Lynnhaven Inlet.
We will have a follow up report sometime around the end of the first week in August. Please feel free to send in your catch reports for your areas you fish. joe@fintalk.com -- Also, You may post your reports in the forum as well.
Best of luck and Tight Lines,
