Fishing Report: WEATHER KEEPS US REELING BUT MARLIN DORADO BITE - FIRST PERSON REPORTS- WHAT IS THIS - PHOTO OF THE WEEK
WHAT NEXT?
If you've ever watched a boxing match where one of the fighters has taken too many hits to the head and you watch him stagger around the ring kind of loopy, but still swinging, that was us this week...and still going on as I write this!
Amigos, we got walloped again and again with combinations that kept us guessing from day to day when the next hit was coming. We still caught fish, but it was a struggle. If you fished this week with us you dealt with 3 storms in a row. We never got a hurricane in a face per se, but Hurricane Hillary stopped several hundred miles south of Cabo but still pushed enough wind and some rain our way to give us 8 foot swells on day and plenty of cloud cover. Right after that, we got tropical pain-in-the butt "E-9" (It didn't even rate a name), but it was enough to bring more clouds and wind; then we got "Tropical Depression Irwin" that is still lingering as I write this!
Add to the residual effects of a full moon...lack of live bait...water temps that dropped a few degrees and it was real recipe for big-apple-bendover-fishing...
We never had to cancel any trips, but for at least 4 of the last 7 days, it was pretty rough outside although guys continued to fish through the nastiness. Hat's off especially to Dan Fedorka's great group who refused to let any of this affect their good times. These guys hung in there and never stopped smiling despite the tough fishing and were still able to bang out some good fish that ended up on the happy hour barbecue.
Dorado bit with more of those small dorado coming along but occasional big bulls showing. Still lots of marlin around. In fact, one day when it was nastiest, we hooked 22 marlin on the La Paz side. Las Arenas has some better activity with giant squid still being taken; some larger bull dorado at the buoys; an occasional tuna and wahoo still biting now and then.
If you're coming down this week, just be prepared for anything. Dorado will be your mainstay catch with marlin a good shot too.
FIRST PERSON REPORT
Dave Link brought his amigos and family from Orange Co., California and wrote up this great report:
Dear Jonathan,
Once again, it was a GREAT trip. The only negative was that mo 20-year-old son Jordan and his buddy Matt out fished me. Chalk one up for the youngsters.
Day One was Las Arenas. It was a very slow day for most of the boats. After catching some very large squid for bait we headed out. Caught one smallish Dorado fairly early, then nothing for a long time. Getting late in the day I showed the skipper here new Rapalas I bought to try and catch Wahoo. About ten minutes later, BAM, we got hit and my son landed a real nice size Wahoo.

Day two I fished La Paz with my brother Rob, the best fisherman in the group. My son fished with his friend Matt. We only had big bait and our skipper was looking to match the four marlin he had the day before. They were catching small Dorado all over the place but Cesar did not want to stop. My 10# bass rig was begging for one of those 15# fish, but it was not meant to be……..Skunked for the first time in La Paz. This would not have hurt so much had Jordan and Matt not caught two Marlin; a Stripper and a Blue. Our Cousin’s, Ken, Dave, and Mike Bryant also had a good day landing a marlin and a number of nice Dorado’s.
Day Three was a different story. With small bait we went directly after the Dorado. My son and I hit the sweet spot before 7:30 and it was wide open. I fished the Dorado all day with the 10# Shimano Chronach setup and just had a blast. We released all except a couple good size fish and the ones that had swallowed the bait (I was late in the draw).
Attached you will find a picture of day one Wahoo, day two Marlin with Matt Smith and Jordan Link, day two mourning of the skunk with Rob and Dave Link
Thanks again for doing such a great job!

WHAT IS THIS BEAST?

We thought it was a triggerfish...a darned BIG triggerfish! Kenny Duoung of La Verne CA pulled this guy off the reef and we weighed it at a whopping 11 pounds! I sent the photo to my guru, author and expert, Gene Kira of Baja Destinations and Western Outdoor News and he said it might NOT be a triggerfish, but some other species. He sent the photo off for marine biology i.d. We'll keep you posted. We're having it mounted!
PHOTO OF THE WEEK:
John Luker of Arroyo Grande CA dropped the hammer on this monster bull dorado fishing with Captain Raul Martinez just north of La Paz. Look at the size of that head!

That's my story!
