Fishing Report: Virginia Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report
September so far has offered up some decent fishing for Chesapeake Bay anglers. Although the action was slow to start the month it has more than picked up here lately with many big Cobia being taken in the Chesapeake Bay and just outside the mouth of the Bay. Inside the Bay between the 4rth Island and the High Rise Bridge several 50 pound plus fish have been boated.
Outside the Bay along the CB line the action is spectacular with many boats reporting upwards of 10 and 15 large Cobia per day although most of these fish are being released to swim another day. Anglers looking for a big Cobia should not wait to head out as this Cobia action will start to wane because the fish are leaving the area as fall and lower temperatures filter into the area.
As one species leaves another arrives as is the case with the striper along the Mid-Atlantic coast. Big striper have started to show but depending on what state and where you fish you may not be able to keep these fish. That will change soon as the official opening of Virginia striper season is just around the corner and while anxious anglers anticipate the hot action big fish are starting to gather along the Mid-Atlantic beaches. Don't be surpised to see a fish or two topping 60 pounds as these striper seem to just get bigger every year. With the restrictions on these fish, with anglers practicing catch and release, and with so many successful fisheries restocking efforts these fish have and should continue to grow bigger and more plentiful every year.
Bottom fishing was very spotty. Good catches one day followed by slow action the next - typical dog days of summer bottom fishing action. Most of the action came in shallow depths in about 40' of water or less especially near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel's First Island for flounder, croaker, and small trout. Chesapeake Bay fishing for croaker has been good with some large croaker being caught. Last week there were croaker in the 2 lb lb range being caught around the man made islands of the CBBT. Spot have started their fall showing in the inlets of Lynhaven, Little Creek, and Rudee with some topping the 1 pound minimum for a Virginia state citation award.
Offshore Fishing:
The YFT action has heated up to a boil with a fresh report today, Sept 20, of some outstanding action with many fish topping 50 pounds. Jimmy K. of Off the Hook Offshore Fishing Tackle reported some spectacular yellowfin tuna action today off Virginia Beach and said "At one point we couldnt get but two lines in because as soon as you let out the second one the first would go off." Jimmy said they finished the day with 9 tunas topping 50lbs, 4 gaffers & hand full of bailers and left em still bitin as they headed to the beach because the weather turned foul.
Many boats will be heading out this weekend for the hot tuna action assuming the weather holds and we will have a follow up report on the weekend fishing next week. Expect to see that report sometime around the middle of the last week of September.
Best of luck and Tight Lines,
