Fishing Report: September 22, 2005
INSHORE - Fishing in the Ft. Pierce area has been tough this week with Rita giving us plenty of wind. But, I am still getting good reports of snook around the Taylor Creek Spillway and they are taking live mullet. Most of the snook at Taylor Creek have been over the 34 inch slot. Also, a good snook bite being reported around the docks along the Ft. Pierce Inlet at night for anglers using live shrimp or mullet. The trout action has been good if you can find a place out of the wind and some clean water. Live finger mullet has been the bait taking most of the trout. There are still plenty of snapper and sheepshead along the channel edges of the Intercoastal. These fish have been feeding on live shrimp. There has been some fair sized flounder being caught in the Turning Basin and around the local bridges. If it is redfish you want then look along the docks of Indian River Drive early in the morning. The spanish mackerel and jacks are all around the Ft. Pierce Inlet and between the North and South Bridges. A small silver spoon trolled around the Intercoastal and in the Ft. Pierce Inlet will work just fine.
OFFSHORE - The offshore sea conditions are still not that good but they are supposed to calm down for the weekend. Look for scattered dolphin starting in 200 feet of water and going deep. Some sailfish to the south of the Ft. Pierce Inlet in 95 to 125 feet of water. Plenty of bonita's, sharks and cuda's to keep you busy. I did get a couple of reports of cobia in 60 feet of water. Last Friday and Saturday we had a good number of fish come into the docks -- dolphin to 18 pounds, kings to 21 pounds, 57 pound cobia, tuna, 1 sailfish release and all the sharks, cuda's and bonita's you could count.
TEEN ANGLERS - The first inshore tournament of the new school year was on September 18th. In the middle school division 1st place went to Tyler Serio of LPA and 2nd was Vincent Serio of Forest Grove. In the high school division it was all about Westwood High. 1st place went to Alford Blythwood, 2nd - Chad Painter and 3rd was Taylor Purcell. Biggest fish of the tournament went to Tyler Serio. The teens received trophies, t-shirts and fishing gear for their efforts. The next monthly tournament will be on October 9th at Jaycee Park in Ft. Pierce.
