Fishing Report: The fishing action has been as hot as the summer heat! From Pine Island south to the 10,000 Islands you can find red fish schooled up in massive numbers, and Snook popping helpless prey under the tangled mangroves. Out in the passes and off the beaches you can find tarpon gulping air, rolling around at first light, heading south for remaining of the year before winter. And you you can't forget about the trout on the grass beds.
All these fish have been falling for a top water plug at first light. The Rapala "skitter walk"in the mullet color or the Zara Spook Jr. in natural colors have been knocking out the trout in Pine Island!! And whenever we came across one of those giant schools of red fish, it was mass mayhem. One particular time I had two red fish hooked at one time, one on the front hook, and the other on the back. Unfortunately, both fish went opposite directions and pulled free, awesome sight though in the clear waters of the Sound.
Down south, in the 10,000 Islands just about every little creek is loaded with baby tarpon. Little nieve guy's, great for the fly rod. Most fish weigh between 5 and 30 pounds, jump like crazy and are more than willing to eat everything from flies to jerk bait. A top water plug is pretty exciting, although most of the time they miss the hooks, actually what happens is the wake off their nose pushes the plug aside. Out in the bigger bays in the deep back country, you can still find a few laid up giants for those willing to take the time to look!
The next month or so should continue to be the same, until we get our first cold front. Get out on the water and get your fare share before the snow birds start to arrive. Lines tight and screaming drags to all!!!!!!!!!
