Fishing Report: FISHING REPORT for La Paz, Mexico
WINDS DIE AND FISH FOAM FOR LA PAZ ANGLERS - FIRST PERSON REPORTS - AIRLINE ALERT - GALLERY - PHOTO OF THE WEEK
DORADO BITE GOES OFF
The week started off windy and scratchy with chop and residual winds from old storms, but once that finally broke it went flat, hot and WFO on the dorado for our La Paz boats. In fact, this might have been the best dorado bite of the year with some boats coming back early either too tired or too plugged from so many dorado.
These weren't just the little firecracker doofus baby fish either (although there's still too many of those), but mixed in were some goodsized 20-40 pound bulls that are more common to this time of the year. The bite was so good that we switched many of our Las Arenas anglers over to fish the La Paz side were it was almost impossible NOT to catch a fish. Some guys were telling me...We could have put 50 fish in the boat if we wanted to! One of our guys said, We tried to pull away to go find something else, but it seemed like the school would just follow us around like doggies looking for buscuits! As another of our amigos described it, We would get into a school a bang fish, hang a few and lose a few and it would be chaos. Then it would go dead for an hour. Then we'd come on another school and it would be insanity. It was this pattern all day long! You know it's a good bite when even our skippers didn't want any extra fish from our anglers because the skippers own refrigerators were already jammed with fish!
Mixed in with the dorado, of course, were the marlin. Nothing really big although one 400 pound blue did hit the scales (it ate a dorado colored marlin jig..natch!) but quite a few striper biters were on the chew.
It's a good thing that the La Paz bite was so rocking because the Las Arenas bite turned really scratchy. We've moved our pangas over to Muertos Bay now for the rest of the season but the winds have been on-again/off again in the area. Big squid continue to kick butt on the guys and we are still catching a few tuna and big pargo, but I think until the winds make up their mind, it's going to be a pick bite for a bit. It will be interesting to see what happens with the full moon because all season, the full moon has been the BEST bite for both our fleets.
A few other things...water temps are still great at about 84 degrees. It never really warmed up to the 90's like last year. Winds have started to change and it's clear that the season is changing with winds now prevailing from the north. Also, if you've never seen whale sharks, for the past 3 weeks, we've had whale sharks right in the bay that we've been snorkelling with in the shallow warm water. If you've never been in the water with a 30-40 foot fish, it's quite an eye-opener with these gentle critters.
FIRST PERSON REPORTS
My buddy Rod Brown from Wrangel Alaska is a retired teacher: Hey Jonathan, Arrived home yesterday after a smooth trip.
Thanks again for setting up another great fishing trip. My brother enjoyed it very much too. I hope I can talking him into returning next year with me. Catching my first marlin was a real thrill.
On our last fishing day out of LaPaz it was much less windy and the fishing improved a lot. We boated 8 nice dorado and lost several more. (Joel had to work, so we went out with Marcos.)
As usual, I can't say enough good things about your arrangements - simply fantastic!! Thanks again.
I'll send some photos when I've had a chance to go through them. See you next year!! Rod
Our other amigo from Idaho, Jeff Johnson who visits us a few times a year:
Hi Jon,
Finally getting a report to you, although you already know most of the details. Getting to La Paz was as uneventful as ever. Dodged a few magnificent cloud formations on the LAX to HMO leg, remnants of Cousin Otis. (Thank God he stayed to the west & north) First day we fished La Paz side, and did very good on the dorado. Sure seemed like we had to wade through a ton of needlefish, but you never knew if the next one would be another needler or a big goldfish! Our boat brought in 6 dorado, Jim 1 (my biz partner) and Jim 2 (Jim 1's brother in law from Sacramento) brought in 9 or 10, if I remember right. We caught 5 dodos within a 15 minute period. I had heard about this phenomenon from my brother, but never saw it before. It was truly WFO! The skipper was actually running! Gaffing fish, baiting hooks, directing traffic, it was nuts!
The second day was to Las Arenas, where we immediately got into those squid you have been telling us about. Between the two boats, we got 7. The first one I got, I thought I had bottom! The skipper pulled on my drag and said 'poco más', so I tightened it a bit, he tested again and said 'poco más', then said OK. Then that squid started taking line! I was sweating before the sun was even up getting that ugly thing to the boat! We fished most of the morning off of Punta Perico, just a short ride from the lighthouse. We saw a few tuna caught here and there, then about 10:30, it started! In the next two hours we put 4 ahi in the boat in the 10 to 15 pound range, losing one at the gaff. What a blast! This was my first tuna, same for my friend Dale Blake. Dale is from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, and a 'big fish' for him is normally a 15 trout! Jim 1 & Jim 2 did even better, I think they boated 7 tuna!
All in all, a wonderful trip, as we have become accustomed to. Jack and the drivers were always there for us, the room upgrades were FANTASTIC and well worth the few extra dollars, and the weather was almost perfect. Thanks again Jonathan, well done, we will see you next trip!

Spike Adams from San Diego tagged this nice pargo lisa (mullet snapper) off Las Arenas lighthouse.

Yes...somedays the tuna do bite. Here's me on one of those days when I couldn't resist anymore and had to get in on the chew.

What a hog! Sarah Moss with a pig of a pargo...I wish we had gotten a scale onto this thing. What a beast!

Yes...we're still catching giant squid off Las Arenas. Here, one of the critters comes aboard
AIRLINE TICKET ALERT
Unfortunately, I have not been able to confirm this, but it appears that Aero California might be running one of it's secret half-price sales. Normally, they do this in January to March, but an insider just told me that until Monday the 17th at closing, Aero Cal is holding some kind of a blow-out sale. My understanding is that...If you are ready to buy your ticket, you can purchase open-date tickets that are good anytime between now and June 2006. You do NOT need to know your dates. You just need to use the ticket before June 2006. These sales are awesome. Unfortunately, it's now Sunday night and I just learned of this and cannot confirm this until Monday morning However, I wanted to clue you in. I did run a check on tickets tonite and there are some as low as $212 for flying this week!!! That's about 80 dollars less than normal so you may want to check in on it ASAP before the Aero Cal closes on Monday night. Their toll free number is 800-237-6225. They might put you on hold for awhile, but it's worth the savings. Might be a nice Christmas gift!
FISHING PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Bryant Buschman came all the way from Pennsylvania and got his first dorado...a champ bull while fishing with our La Paz fleet.
That's my story!
