Fishing Report: Well we have had our first cold front and it has really started the fish moving. The HUGE MANGROVE have moved from the deeper water on the edge of the reef to the patch reefs in around 25' of water. I fished a group from Orlando this week and our first and last stop was on a patch reef straight out in front of Biha Honda. We got anchored up on a sweet little reef in 25' of water, put some chum in the water and it was on. We started with small pinfish and the mangrove started to show. After boxing 4 or 5 in the 3lb range, the ballyhoo showed up in a big way, one throw of the net filled the livewell and the cooler, about 500 or so. We started to bait our 3/8 oz Z's Jigs with the live Ballyhoo and the Big Boys stepped up to the Dinner Table. We were able to put 20 or so fish in the box in the 5lb to 6lb range, (huge for mangrove). We were also lucky enough to catch 15 or so Grouper, although only 1 made the size limit, it was a 24" Red, nice fish !!!! Also showing up in the chum slick were good amounts of Yellowtail a few of which were large enough to eat whole Ballyhoo, Cero and King mackeral, Mutton none large enough for me to keep although they did make the legal size. There have also been good amounts of Gaffer Dolphin on the edge of the reef, moving up and down the Color Change. SailFish have also started to make their yearly apperance a little bit early. All the Captains are hopping the stars align like they did last year. What we need is a good cold snap in the area between Ft. Pierce and Ft. Lauderdale to start the fish moving South, then we need a good South or Southeast wind to push them up on the reef. This creates sort of a SailFish Funnel. Once the Sails get up on the reef they will stay, due to the fact thet there are a huge number of ballyhoo on the reef and in the Bay just like last year. |
