Puerto Rico Fishing Report
San Juan/Carolina Inshore
With the cold fronts arriving from the north, the tarpon and snook are entering into the San Juan Estuary lagoons and canals in large numbers. The charter boats have been busy catching and releasing many tarpon. While some boats report releasing up to 15 fish in a 4 hour trip, most release from 4 to 8 fish per trip. That gives the chance for everyone in the boat to enjoy a battle with one of the toughest fishing opponent, the tarpon. Most of these tarpon are in the 10 to 25 pound range, although a few fish up to 120 pounds have also been caught and released. As you would imagine the fight on light tackle is very exciting, with tarpon making repeated runs and spectacular jumps that keep the anglers on their toes at all moments.
The snook bite is incidental, because the target species is tarpon, and the occasional snook in the 8 to 10 pound range have also been caught and released.
The tarpon have responded well to the jumbo bay anchovies and mojarra used as live bait during the winter season, using Owner Mutu Light Circle hooks in sizes from 3/0 to 5/0 depending on the size of the tarpon encountered. Spinning tackle using from 8 to 20 pound test is used by the charter operators to deliver the baits to the prowling fish. Fluorocarbon leaders from 20 to 80 pound test are used to fool the wary fish.
Fly fishermen have had a great time lately with the small tarpon responding very well to black clouser minnows, olive and white clouser minnows and the new favorite the Gummi minnow, all of these flies in sizes 1/0 and 2/0 hooks. Fly rods and reels equipped with intermediate sinking lines from 8 wt. to 10 wt. get the job done and provide the leverage necessary to work the tarpon efficiently during the battle.
