Fishing Report: TUNA SURPRISE LAS ARENAS ANGLERS - DORADO STILL EATING - SHORTY ROD WINNERS - CABIN FEVER CLASSIC - PHOTO OF THE WEEK
TUNA IN DECEMBER?
I thought winter was finally roaring in on us as the week started with some heavy duty north winds that are typical of this time of year. These winds were predicted to last the better part of the week. Fortunately, we didn't have anglers early on and the winds quit sooner than expected and we followed up with fairly flat seas and sunny skies in the high 70s. In addition to a decent dorado bite that continues for our La Paz fleets, the biggest news was the snap of yellowfun tuna that surprised our Las Arenas boats. Yup! It's December and this is the first time I can remember that tuna must have lost their way and forgotten it was almost Christmas. The body of fish was found in a finger of warm water that extended from the south. Commercial pangas were the first to locate the fish then the sportfishers got in on it and fish from footballs to 30 pounds were suddenly eating just about everything that got tossed in the water. Pretty exciting stuff. The next day, the waters went flat again and the fish were nowhere to be found. Still, you just never know! The weather seems to be holding out and surprisingly there is still pelagic species around like the dorado and occasional billfish. Additionally, we are having fun on sierra that have moved up and into our waters as well. We will keep our eyes out!
CABIN FEVER CLASSIC
Just a reminder if you're keen on attending our Cabin Fever Classic in 2006. The dates are March 30 to April 3 and promises to be a lot of fun again. It was something we started as a lark a few years ago and folks just keep coming back. It's always early and it's hard to say what the fishing will be like, but it always turns out good. One year it was roosterfish. Another year it was dorado. Last year we went for a whole bunch of different species. It's basically just a chance to escape from your cabin and cold weather and come play in Baja for a few days with other folks of like mindset and have some fun. People keep coming back year after year. Price is $600 per person double occupancy (two per room and two per boat) and will be hosted at La Concha Beach Resort for 4 nights in an ocean-facing room. Three days of panga fishing are included as well as a bunch of other extras. If you're interested, spots are filling so write me directly at riplipboy@aol.com
Also...January to March...Whale watching in Magdalena Bay is coming up! If you're interested in a once-in-a-lifetime experience...let us know and we'll dial you in!
PHOTO of the Week...
Well...it's my own ugly mug, but that's not the important part. Take a look at the yellowfin tuna. The photo makes it look a lot larger than it is. It's actually about 20 pounds.
That's my story!
